That's what the QuickLaunch toolbar is for...

I've now switched to always using the Windows start menu search as an
application launcher a la Spotlight in OS-X. Hit the Windows key,
start typing the name of a program and hit return. Seems to be much
faster than trying to find where I've hidden a shortcut and keeps the
    taskbar nice and clean.

Yeah I've got the standard Office/net type stuff on there. Desktop's
more current work stuff, iyswim - links to folders, scripts etc. So not
really apps at all, but I was being lazy.

In fact, for ages now on XP, I've just done Start->Run Winword, or
    Excel, or notepad, etc

I didn't do it on XP because I could never remember what programs
where actually called. I like how Win 7 searches for them really
    quickly.

Careful, it won't be long before you're opening up a shell prompt and
piping commands together like a real power user.

    out of rich fools."

I was quite surprised to discover that changing the system location
    gives different sets of images.

My phone's like that. In the UK, it shows the Houses of Parliament, in
France the Arc de Triomphe and in Sweden some monument in Stockholm (I
    guess!)

Poncy GUI over a UNIX kernel. You're just one step away.

Wow, it's a small wonder that people can put their phones away for a
    moment.

Indeed. I'll be on tenterhooks as I land in Greece next month. Which
one of the many monuments will it display?

    I'm going for the Parthenon.

  19. I hate to say this, but I'm with the ginger one on this. I was
    Windows-M until I found Windows-D.
