I appear to completely lack the ability to appreciate abstract art,
and therefore dismiss it. I just don't see the point. The one that
comes to mind immediately (having already been mentioned, IIRC) is
Rothko. There is no way I can comprehend what he "created", and I see
    no worth in it.

Fair enough - this paragraph is all about your inability. Some of us
can look at a Rothko and get a similar feeling to listening to music.

I've looked and looked and looked at those Rothkos and can't hear a
    thing! Not even The Voices.

I can't get past the fact they look like something that should just be
    a bland windows desktop image.

I often wonder what the point is, when my desktop is always completely
covered in windows and it's not visible.

I can too. Unfortunately the music in question is the Tellytubbies
    Christmas album.

Don't you have it permanently running the media centre software? Both
of mine are always in Front Row so I never see the OS-X desktop on
    them either. They're appliances.

And when it is visible, odds are it just makes it harder to see the
icons you might be looking for.

You're using "Windows 7 wallpapers" as a euphemism for "photographs of
    myself", aren't you.

Probably depends on the policies defined on the domain. Sometimes you
can tweak them using gpedit.msc to unlock things like that.

Our domain defines a screensaver, which I can't change; the screensaver
doesn't cope with multiple monitors, so I get that on one side and my
    chosen wallpaper on t'other.

Desktop icons suck also, because the desktop is always completely
covered in windows and they're not visible.

That's what the 'Desktop' link on the toolbar's for. I use it as an
alternative Start button for commonly used apps.

    Not necessarily.

I have a single layer of icons around the very edge of the screen,
generally shortcuts to folders for current projects or document
templates that I use regularly. Quick and easy.

    Toolbar? How quaint.
