Bought a used Futura and the fork (well one tube) looks a bit minging (other
one isn't too clever either) and just wondering if any of the wise ones in
here can tell me if it's terminal..

Looks like it's been attacked with acid but guessing it's due to the bike
being used in all weathers by a rather unsympathetic owner.

Is this just going to keep crumbling away or can I salvage it somehow?

    TIA for any advice,

    Neil.

Ta. Next question, anyone got a rough idea how much new fork tubes will set
me back. (Assuming I can just replace the tubes?).

    Neil says...
That's minging, that is. You need to ask someone what to do with it.

It's going to be a hack, I'd Dremel all that shite flakey stuff off,
then build it back up with chemical metal and sand to shape.... if it's
going to be a nice bike, I'd replace it.

eh, kinda in between. Bought mainly for a bit of touring this summer and
also for use as a second bike during the rain so I can keep my mille in good
    nick.

The fender covers 90% of the damage so my main concern was safety rather
than looks. Don't fancy the thing holing as I'm riding it and spewing oil
over the front tyre. Not sure if that's a real possibilty or not?

Have no clue to the kind of pressure that builds up in a fork when operating
etc or even how thick the tube walls will be.

If it's that deeply rusted replace it. You need to be more worried about
the consequence of it collapsing than springing a leak.

I bet it's only pitted a few thou though, so do what Muck said if you
    can't afford replacement or renovation.

Did you see the pic? A bit more than a few thou mate believe me :(
There's a damaged repairable Futura up for sale with what looks like mint
forks so might just buy that and swap the forks and a few other scruffy bits
then sell it back on. Seems the easiest option..

Yeh, seems like a good option.
