Help - Cruiser or Tourer?

Hi All, I'm hoping for some useful advice from your most experienced selves.
    I'm a 50 something returning biker, although in my mis-spent youth I didn't
bother with a full licence, just rode on the provisional, dammit.
Anyway - I'm looking at getting a bike, and really don't want one of the
superfast machines - just a cruiser or tourer, capable of a respectable 100
mph or so. So, should I go for a cruiser like a Yamaha XVS1150A or similar,
or a fully faired tourer like a BMW? I'm keen on the shaft drive.......
    Any help gratefully received.
    Nick

    Not another one.

Why don't you wrinkly old gits just stay in yer nice warm centrally
heated houses like you are supposed to?
Pretty much any unrestricted bike over 175cc is capable of 100mph these
days granddad. Hard to buy one that isn't really.

While you remain unsure of your sexuality my advice to you would be to
    stay off bikes altogether.

Alternatively why not do your DAS and buy a shite ole 500 and bang
around on that for 6 months and allow your hormones to settle.

If you plan on doing the respectable 100 mph to get from here to there
I think you will really appreciate some sort of fairing. And even if I lack
experience on cruisers I suspect that your back will appreciate a riding
position that lets you lean into the wind rather than doing a parachute
    imitation.

On the offchance you are not a troll, can I just ask, are you serious?

Get your full licence, then get a middleweight. Yamaha do the xv650, Honda
the Dullville, and you may chance across a BMW K75.

Get used to the weight and handling of one of them before trying a litre
    bike.

From nowt to BMW 1000cc is a good recipe for not having a retirement to
enjoy, and worse, you may involve me or someone I know.

Tourers handle differently to chromosexual cruisers, the riding position is
different, the engine characteristics are different. Have you thought this
    through?

Welcome back Nick, ignore the boy racers. They will no doubt be faster
than you and probably do it on only one wheel, but so what.

I am of similar age and returned 18 months ago. Had some lessons and
got a Kawasaki ER5 a nice forgiving bike to get back on to. After a
year I got a Honda Deauville (or Dullsville) as some would have it.
Thoroughly enjoying it regardless of weather and snide comments etc.
It won't do fast but plenty fast enough for me, it's just nice being
as someone said recently close to the outside.

    Whatever you do do not expect today's machines to be like yesteryears;
if you do you may find the end of the road sooner than you think, and
rumour has it it hurts. Get back into it slowly but enjoy yourself.
