Others on here will have more info on this.

A few years ago a biker was stopped by the police, and prosecuted on
the grounds that his sunglasses were not of a type 'approved' by the
Secretary of State for such use. Not surprising as none were.

If your Ray-Burns &c aren't 'approved' then your ordinary specs won't
    be either.

So: you have to wear specs by law, but you are forbidden by law to
wear specs. Kiss your bike-riding goodbye....unless the law has
    changed.....
    Can't say I blame you.

Not surprised they aren't approved. Who'd want to ride around with a fucking
    great oven on their head?

  7. 'approved' for what
Err - Surely if you wear them behind an approved visor, no problemo. If
you wear them as eye protection, they have to approved.

    Wibble Flip etc.

IIRC, only visors and goggles need to be approved. Specs and sunnies are
    exempt.

Complete and utter nonsense, it'd be illegal to ride without them as
specs are corrective, rather than eye protection.

Let's put this into perspective, could you imagine a police officer
confiscating a wheel chair in a pedestrian only zone?

Are you confusing this with the story of the biker who had his illegal
tinted visor confiscated and was offered a pair of cheap sunglasses to
use to get him home as he was not carrying a spare (legal) visor?

    Thanks to all who replied.

I'll just say I'm surprised at the response: the issue was discussed
at length on this group at the time, including references to the Act
under which the police officer acted.

IIRC it turned out that under the regulations promulgated by the
Secretary of State *anything* on the head (of a biker) had to be
approved by him: helmets and visors obviously, but sunglasses were
then included by the action of the magistrates who tried the case.
Nothing was said that exempted prescription spectacles, effectively
disbarring all spectacle/contact-lens wearers from biking.

I merely wondered if things had moved on.....apparently they've moved
    backwards instead.

As a glasses-wearing biker, I'm interested myself, but haven't checked
back on the group for some years. Doesn't *anyone* remember the case?

This touches on the subject but isn't quite what I remember. JP was a
    speedcop.

JP staggered into uk.rec.motorcycles and whispered to the barman...
So, what would happen if I get stopped for having a tinted visor but
    it
was up? Is it seen as non-conforming eye protectors, even if it
    wasn't
    in use?

Get's rather complicated all this legal stuff, doesn't it?!
