Helmet testing

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Middleaged Mutant Ninja Rider, Nov 6, 2004.

  1. Has anyone used Phoenix to check out their bounced Arais? Apparently
they will assess and re-cert old/dinked helmets. The outfit in Farnham
[1] only do destructive testing which ain't a lot of use.....

    Cheers.

[1] The one listed in the UKRM FAQ [2] as doing a 7 page illustrated
report despite me emailing the FAQ-Gods 6 months ago telling them that
they no longer do this. Or maybe they do, but they will give you your
    helmet back in several pieces....

[2] Damn fine chaps they are too. Got chatting to them a while back
while trying to get my lid assessed the first time, and they showed me
round all their test rigs etc. Fascinating. Probably worth calling them
and trying to arrange a visit if you are at all interested in how
helmets are tested and can get to Farnham in Darkest Surrey.

    Middleaged Mutant Ninja Rider says...
IIRC Champ has sent his Arai back to Phoenix for checking and I sent
quite a few when I worked at HG in Harrow and Slough. They seem to be
pretty consistent and will send helmets back as safe to use. They aren't
always looking for a sale by saying yours is fucked and you should buy a
new one. If it's obviously knackered - like if there are fibres showing
through the scrapes - then don't waste your time or theirs, just scrap
it and buy a new one.
