Helmet strength.

  1. From a friend who is a motorcyclist and a target rifle shooter, currently
doing a stint in Iraq with the TA as a medical officer:

A .22 subsonic round will, from fairly close range. A .22 supersonic or
any larger calibre round will from any reasonable range ie range at which
a decent shot would expect to hit such a target. This is provided the
angle at which the round struck the helmet was not so shallow as to cause
it to glance off. Interestingly, yesterday we had a soldier admitted who
had been shot at, probably with a 7.62mm round. It hit the front of his
(kevlar combat, not motorcycle) helmet, penetrated the helmet and his
scalp. circled round the outside of his skull under the skin, and exited
from the back of his head, leaving a dirty great exit hole in his helmet!
If anyone want to donate motorbike crash helmets for a video of different
calibre rounds hitting them, I might be up for it!

While this test may be amusing, I'm not sure how we'd go about the
logistics of collecting old lids and delivering them to Scotland where she
    lives:)

    Regards, Ian

As I said, it's not something I'll be describing in detail on ukrm.
Believe it or not, there are bigger things to worry about than a few
sarcy remarks on a newsgroup. And not every crash results in a good pub
    tale.

Mock all you want, it's not happening.

OK, anyone else got the details?

Well, if anyone has an old helmet[1] they could get to EoSM, I can destroy
    it with various calibres.

  11. So how do you explain my helmet? Dropped, a bike falled on it and ~100
blows with a shovel. Still uncompromised?

How you you explain GRP boats? People stamping all over them for
decades, spars being dropped on them, the occasional collision, banging
    against pontoons?

Good repairs and paint. Take a look at an old kayak, never painted, to see
what actually happens to the structure of grp, kevlar or cf.

  13. The hypothesis is that GPR becomes dangerously weak after one light
    knock.

I don't think everytime someone drops the kite pole on a GPR boat that
    a repair is required.

.....and that doesn't explain my helmet which has had no repairs and is
still solid as a rock after a shed load of shovel based abuse.

    How do you know?
The worry is about small, heavy things being dropped on CRP.

  16. Well I know the first 99 didn't compromise it in any meaningful way.
Happens on boats all the time. I dropped a car bettery once.

Okay - stick your head in that helmet - go out and have a crash.
If you survive without brain damage and the helmet has stood up

  18. Wouldn't it be wiser to *simultate* an impact with something like, err,
    a shovel?

    Which I've done.

.....and the helmet has stood up pretty damn well.

I think there's a fundamental misunderstanding of GRP from the 'helmets
are weak as egg shells' brigade.

I can't help but feel that you have a fundamental misunderstanding of the
manner in which helmets fail, not to mention the forces involved.

Try bouncing your head off the road at 40mph from 6 feet up and I guarantee
you that the impact forces involved are an order of magnitude greater than
    you and your shovel.

You may be twatting the thing with a shovel as hard as you like and not
seeing it crack in two, but I promise you it would fail in a high speed
impact that a virgin helmet would survive.

  20. Ditto. When I slid ungracefully off the car bonnet onto my nut, dome
first. I suppose I should be grateful the helmet/clavicle interaction
    saved my brains.
