Helmet lifetime

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Antony Gelberg, Sep 15, 2006.

  1. Hi all,

A friend of mine is getting back into biking after 5-6 years. He has an
AGV full-face lid in perfect condition, stamped 1999 manufacture, which
has been sitting in a cupboard since 2002ish.

Is there any /data/ to suggest that a helmet should be replaced after
the often-mooted five years, or is it more likely just manufacturer hype
to get people to spend money?

(He knows it's his head etc, and why take chances, but the question is
    still relevant.)

    Antony

Not that I know of, although some of our materials experts may have
opinions on the matter but given who they are and what we know of them
all ready no one will take a blind bit of notice.

    Probably.

I think the figure ought to be based upon total exposure to UV and the
degree to which "fair wear and tear" affects the ultimate performance.
Which, in the case of your mate, is bugger all.

If he is at all concerned them then ask him why he bothered to fucking
    ask in the first place?

It's an AGV. That should be more than enough reason to go an bin it.

Do you think anyone here gives a **** about your head?

When instructing, we tell the CBTers to change their helmets every 5 years.
But TBH, it really depends on the usage and if it still fits correctly.
