What's the current thinking on helmet life? It suddenly occurred to me that my current lid is > 5 years old. While it's not been used *much* over the last couple of years, it was used in all weathers for the first couple of years of it's life, every day. Still good, or time for a new one? -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) 116 Giulietta 3.0l Sprint 1.7 GTV TS GT 3.2 V6 Triumph Sprint ST 1050: It's blue, see. #www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk
I still use an Arai bought in 2003, although I have a newer Shoei as well. I have a pinlock on the Shoei for wet weather. I have a dark visor for the Arai so have used it on the last 2 summer trips abroad. I might pension off the Arai this year as the chinstrap has started to fray.
I read somewhere this week that John McGuiness (or some other TT rider) has used the same lid for 11 years or so. Could be bollocks, but I reckon if it's not been dropped and generally abused, a helmet will last a lot longer than the "recommended" 5 years. Give me your old one of you do.
You had your chance when you painted it -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) 116 Giulietta 3.0l Sprint 1.7 GTV TS GT 3.2 V6 Triumph Sprint ST 1050: It's blue, see. #www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk
Right. That's sorted then. -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) 116 Giulietta 3.0l Sprint 1.7 GTV TS GT 3.2 V6 Triumph Sprint ST 1050: It's blue, see. #www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk
I think it was something he mentioned in TT3D. I think it might be - I'd expect scrutineers to check the age of the helmet and 11 years of use means it's getting on a bit.
Shell's probably fine, ditto the padding, but the rest of it is likely to be manky. Just changed my Caberg for a brand new Shoei for just that reason.
Is there a date stamp? -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) 116 Giulietta 3.0l Sprint 1.7 GTV TS GT 3.2 V6 Triumph Sprint ST 1050: It's blue, see. #www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk
Actually, it's OK, or I wouldn't be asking -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) 116 Giulietta 3.0l Sprint 1.7 GTV TS GT 3.2 V6 Triumph Sprint ST 1050: It's blue, see. #www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk
So the Caberg was about 6 months old then? Even as budget helmets go, they are pretty shit. The quality of the interior linings is awful and the fit becomes about 2 sizes too big after about 6 months of daily use. I wouldn't touch one with a bargepole -- Lozzo Versys 650 Inter-Continental Hyperbolistic Missile , CBR600F-W racebike in the making, TS250C, RD400F (somewhere) BMW E46 318iSE (it's a car, not one of those 2-wheeled pieces of shite they churn out)
ON most helmets, yes. It's on a sticker inside the lining, or embossed on the chinstrap on Shoeis and Arais. -- Lozzo Versys 650 Inter-Continental Hyperbolistic Missile , CBR600F-W racebike in the making, TS250C, RD400F (somewhere) BMW E46 318iSE (it's a car, not one of those 2-wheeled pieces of shite they churn out)
Oh bugger! Wifey wants me to paint hers Sparkling Orange now. I'm happy to do that, but I'm NOT getting her a fucking scooter.
It could very well have been. My lid has no date on it and I doubt it's the scruters job to ask how old it is.
