Get a decent webcam, Logitek 4000 springs to mind, then a notebook
and download VirtualDub. Put the notebook in a backpack, gaffa the
webcam to your helmet, have someone help you start recording.
The main problems with this are, the webcam footage will be 15fps and
if you use full resolution (640 x 480) it will generate an enormous
file. Try one gig for 4 minutes. Also, you may have to fool the
notebook so you can close the lid without it going into "hibernation"
mode. Advantages are, very portable, you will already have a digital
    file and importantly, its cheap!

  2. But it'll hardly produce the close-to-broadcast quality footage they're
    after...

Not a bad solution if you just want some cheap fun on-bike footage
though (well, its cheap if you've already got most of the bit you
    need)...

    Yikes, what a crap idea!

My sub $400 digital camera could be easily taped to my helmet (or just
about anywhere, it's so small) and happily films away at 320x240x30fps
until the 512mb memory card is full (about half an hour) and the
resultant footage looks a lot better than any webcam I've seen.

Guys, I'm pretty serious about setting up a decent rig.

Mates tell me that you need the cam @ wheel level to get any degree of
    realism.
    I'm open to suggestion.

Would a fibre optic camera b required >?
I have access to IDE to Compact flash convertors -- so no moving parts in
    the HDD.

4Gb CF --- think about the possibilities....
