Hello

I've been lurking this NG for the past few weeks, which if I find inviting,
would consider subscribing to. It seemed a nice friendly place, then wham
bam! Strewth, what happened? For no apparent reason, that I could deduce, it
sort of exploded.

Does this happen frequently, or is it just a one off?

Generally it's friendly. There are some people who apparently don't
like each other, and occasionally they spat. Occasionally members of
other groups launch trolling raids. Just ignore those threads. I's not
compulsory to participarte in a flame war. Some news reading software
allows the use of killfilles, so you don't even have to see threads
from individuals (or particular threads) if you choose not to. I use
Google Groups via Firefox with Greasemonkey and a Google Groups
Killfile script (all free). Buggered if I can remember where I got it,
but Google could tell you.

I would say that 99% [1] in here take the piss out of each other at
sometime or other.

Sometimes it gets a little overheated and other times it can be funny
as all ****.

What I have found though is nearly all will/would meet up in real life
for a beer/feed and have a good laugh about it.

The one criteria required in this group is a very thick skin

If you post any bike/geek article in here, most will do their best to
help you. Then it usually goes off topic and the piss-taking starts!

Gerry's only like this during Harsh Week. I'm not quite sure when it
started, but pretty sure it's been Harsh Week the entire time I've
subscribed. There's no real leader, but everyone gets varying degrees of
respect depending on the circumstances and the poster.

You can't guarantee that it will always have the same high quality bike
related content ratio, or amount of posts, but in general if you have a
motorcycle it's not a bad place to look into now and again.

The best way to learn etiquette around here is just to break it .. or
possibly have an opinion on something like what cruise control should be
called ..

 

I suspect its harsh week.
