Tandem jumping is a dangerous thing for reasons I won't bore you with. Most
skydivers avoid it. It's something clubs do to raise funds generally.

Really? I'm not good with "drops" rather than heights, per se.
F'rinstance, like Ben, I've no problem at all with bridges, gorges and
such like if I'm riding/driving over 'em, loike, but I don't like peering
over/off things and I /definitely/ don't like "rope dangling" aka
rock-climbing -- done it twice and it scared the bejesus out of me on both
    occasions.

One of the more unusual scares I had was on a visit to Rocamadour (sp?) a
few years ago; one can walk out onto a wall (part of the monastery) which
juts out from the cliff wall over the medieval town.

The bit we wound up on was several hundred feet above the town and the
    guard rails were clearly designed for ickler types from the times past;
they came up to about upper thigh.

I've /never/ felt quite so afeared of going over the edge, to the point
that I had to crouch down making myself look even more preposterous than I
    did to begin...

I suffer from a fear of heights and went though a phase of trying to conquer
it, including abseils, parachute jumps and bungee jumps. Unfortunatley all
this did was compound my fears. Before I was terrified of heights but in an
abstract way, now I know *exactly* what it is like to plummet facewards
towards the ground[1] from a great height and can therefore imagine
countless deatth plunge scenarios in a very realistic manner.

[1] Bungee jumps are the worst, you kind of stay still and the ground rushes
    towards you very quickly indeed.

I loved the bit where after you've plunged towards the ground and then
get accelerated upwards theres a while where gravity is slowing your
'bounce' and you feel weightless and seem to float for a while. It
seemed to last for ages, then as said above the ground rushes towards
    you again very swiftly.

Great fun. Glad I did it and would happily do it again.
