If you had working Internet access you'd know how ginger this is.
The hotfix is important. Zonealarm have an update for their broken
    software. HTH.
    Oh great. Brilliant idea.

Don't you find it odd that they write this -

"Microsoft Update KB951748 is known to cause loss of internet access for
ZoneAlarm users on Windows XP/2000.Microsoft Update KB951748 is known to
cause loss of internet access for ZoneAlarm users on Windows XP/2000"

and then follow it up with this -

"Recommended actions Download and install the latest versions which solve
the loss of internet access problem here (English only)"
As is downloading anything from the internet when you can't access it.
I've had updates switched off for a while now.

I've had issues with Zone alarm before.
Can't remember quite what it was, but I got rid of it and now use Comodo.
It seems to be far less of a problem, maybe because it not as good?

<smug> I turned it off when I moved to Linux. Ok, I'll admit to runing
Vmware for a few programs that only run on Windows. Poker clients for
    instance :(

  7. It depends on the situation. Servers - yes. Desktops - no. Especially
desktops of people who don't have a clue about security.

I'd advise setting it to download automatically but only apply when
you select, rather than the auto 3AM thing. But don't skip patches,
as that's how machines get compromised and malware spreads.

With this approach you can see what the implications of a patch are
for a few days before applying, and then you can apply any
prerequisites like the zone alarm update..
