It's not the pupil size that causes the problem, it's the 'bleaching' of
    the light sensitive cells.

No, I did ask an optician about this. Stereo vision is ineffective
beyond a few feet - hence parachutists' "ground rush", for example. I
think one judges greater distances, such as needed for driving, using
a combination of relative size, movement and parallax.

If you think about it, the stereo effect works by comparing different
images. At longer distances, given our eyes' spacing, the images are
so similar that there is simply not enough difference between the two
    images to work with.

One lunchtime a girl came into the local with a 17mm spanner in
her back pocket. Dunno whether it was a fashion accessory or she knew
how to handle a big tool but it was a curiously attractive sight.

How close did you get to check it was 17mm?

  15. 17mm is a woman's size.

    I regularly use a 3/4" drive ratchet wrench & 30mm socket totaling 6.5
Kg at work. It's a bastard if I have to use it one-handed at arm's
length. It's for bolting stuff down to the surface plates so it won't
    move while we test it.
