    Hi all,

I'm riding to So Cal next week (my boy is graduating from High School
and I want some time to reflect and enjoy during this trip
    - and what better than a road trip down and back?). I am thinking of
taking PCH down and a mix of 166/101/52 back I recall
the rain this winter and was wondering if anyone knows the conditions of
any of these side roads? Could you warn me about any
    messed up roads?

    Thanx!

Highway 1 north of SLO is in good shape. South of Lompoc it suffered
serious damage and has been closed on and off recently for repairs.
They're doing maintenenance in several spots between Arroyo Grande and
Guadalupe--it's been a real PITA with one-way controlled traffic every
few miles--so I would definitely avoid that stretch on a weekday. Check
the Caltrans site (http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/) before you leave.

CA166 is fine. In '98 it washed out and claimed the lives of two CHP
officers, but it didn't have any problems that I know this year.

You didn't ask about it, but 33 over the mountains between Ojai and
Maricopa is now open after a long closure.

And that's a beautiful stretch of road. Don't miss it if you can!

  4. Drove 1 Santa Cruz to SLO and then 101 the rest of the way about a month
ago. There were some rough spots on 1 just south of the SLO-Monterey
line. Other than that (and greater LA traffic), nothing worth noting.

    Congrats to your son.

  5. It is, but DOT reports 1 way controlled traffic through 5/20. OTOH,
given the crawl that usually starts on 101 in Santa Barbara, it may be a
    sensible detour.

    Thanx.

I am thinking of taking hwy 1 down to SLO, then pop on down to Santa
    Maria , 166 East, and 33 south...

Coming back ... well, I'd kinda of like to take hwy 152 out of SB, but
    who knows?

I'll probably go through Hollister on my way back, tho'

Hwy 1 is pretty much it's normal wonderful self, a few rough spots where
they've done conctruction and repairs, but nothing bad. Oh, there is
this one gouge in the pavement south of Ragged Point ;-) (OW,ow,ow!)
