Head Bearings

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Wicked Uncle Nigel, May 22, 2005.

  1. Well, well, well...

There's been a nasty "thunk" coming from the BlingMobile over bumps for
a while. I'd suspected head bearings and had tried to feel for notching.

With the front wheel jacked up, nothing. Nada.

With the front wheel on oiled plates, nothing. At all.

I got second opinions, not trusting myself. They concurred.

So, I concluded it may well be forks. I dropped the forks out tonight,
    and then turned the bars.

I could *hear* the notch drop in as the bars centred. I've pulled the
bearings and the notching is quite visible.

Buggered if I know why it was hiding when the forks were in though.

Anyroadup, it's good news. I can settle for an oil change on the forks
and pop new bearings in the head.

I think I'm going to Get A Man In for the valve clearances. I'll leave
it naked and get it over to the dealer as it is (once I've got the
    wheels back on, like...).

Now if *only* I knew someone with a trailer who could get it over to
    Colin Collins for me...

I am. I am also the fellow with remarkably little free time.
Ah. Sir needs to find a (relatively) trustworthy dealer, and get on good
terms with the mechanics, sir does.

BTW, you bought a four-gang extension reel for TeamUKRM yesterday, for
which the team say "thanks very much". :^)

  8. Still doesn't *look* like a Wing should. IMHO, of course.

Doesn't go like one, either, but I still want one.

    <thinks>

Perhaps if it *did* fall off the lift ...
