He had "a mere seven seconds" to react.

Andy, think about that one. They were in the middle of a huge,
antagonistic crowd. Going to the floor would have been a really,
*really* dumb move. He had to protect himself, and others. He was being
hit by an unknown fluid thrown by a person who has been described by
independent (non-police) witnesses as "hyperactive", "erratic" and
    "aggressive".

She ended up with a bruised leg.

    Tough.

I'm imagining myself in the position of facing someone who's reacting
that way, in my face, and throwing an unknown fluid at me.

    Kill-filing isn't an option.

Look, he hit her leg with a baton, once. As he's trained to do. If he'd
beaten her over the head until the corpse stopped twitching, I'd be with
you. As it is, I see his response as - in the circumstances -
reasonable. As did the jury. You differ.

    So it goes.

I simply can't see you being as aggressive and stupid as that woman if
you were faced with the same situation. I can see you making alot of
noise and making a stand, but if a copper gave you the option of
backing off or getting a belt from a baton, I can see you wanting to
protect your youthful looks and getting the **** away from him. I
hardly think you'd be daft enough to throw a liquid over him when he
    has a baton drawn.

Yes I count you as a friend, mostly because I don't class you as a fool.

The one hope I retain is that some day, I will serve on a jury that
will ask me to convict a person based on the testimony of my local
police. After so many years of watching their incompetence, poor
judgment, arrogance, and plain harassment, it's one legitimate way to
    take a stand.

  5. To be fair, if it was that horrible (insert pikey supermarket) own-brand
stuff, perhaps he was simply expressing his opinion of her shopping
    habits.

I don't think that this is limited to only British troops. That is just
    a very recent example.
    That cuts both ways.
Someone would. Just out of curiosity, do you think she'd have struggled
more under those conditions, or loess?
I can't see any parallels there, at all.

Why didn't he do his job properly and arrest her if he was so sure she
was breaking the law and if he wasn't sure then he shouldn't have hit
    her.

No? It's called getting away with a crime.

Well, in the SMellie case, he's been tried. Your scenario seems to avoid
    that.

Sorry. Obviously I am missing your point. Are you saying that we should
meet out summary justice when we don't like the verdicts that the jury,
who have access to *way* more info than any of us here do, are not to
    our liking?

Ok, I think the cop is a thug and you think he acted reasonably.
Nothing will change that and I seriously hope nothing ever shatters
your image of the great British policeman.

Well it hasn't so far. It does strike me how different people's
perceptions are. I have never had dealings with the police that were
anything other than polite and respectful.

Equally, the moment that anyone says 'All bikers do...' bikers are up in
    arms.

    Funny old world.
