So their 'expert' basis for believing the world may end is that the Mayans
believed that the world exists in cycles of 144,000 days and one of these
comes to an end in 2012.

Now I don't want to poke a hole in their theories, but 144,000 days is
around 394 years and I'm pretty sure the world didn't end 1618.

Haha - one thing lading to another (as they do), I found this:-

I was so sure tradition dictated that these people should disembowel
themselves or set themselves alight or somesuch. This doesn't seem half as
    dangerous.
