Look, it's visual humour. You'll either see it or you won't.

The photo of the poisoned ex-spy looks like Derek, the gay-but-in-denial
character from the Catherine Tate Show. Ish. The whole thing with the
character is that everyone talks to him as if he is gay (which he is) and he
takes offence, usually ending the conversation with ".... and *you* have
the termerity to think *I* love it up the chocolate pipe? How *very* dare
you!" or some such line, before mincing off....

Ah, I thought it might have been Little Britain as I had heard people
using the phrase but didn't know what it meant, IYSWIM.

Ahh, that'd explain it. I've never been able to watch more than about
five minutes of her show. Just like LoG, LB and so many other unfunny
    comedies of recent years.
Larrf? I bet you shat tourself.[1]

    [1] Now _that_ was comedy.

On form there, mistaking the shortcomings of your own sense of humour

It's strange because I loved The Fast Show (and still do). They're all
exactly the same formula but I just can't get into LB and the like now.

Not sure about the 'in denial' as he usually has his boyfriend
(long-term) with him. I think he knows he's gay. But he's definitely not
'out' and thinks no-one else knows he's gay. Very funny, but we share a
Christian name which means I sometimes get 'how very dare you' when
    introduced :-(

    Rowley Birkin[1], QC.

Before The Last Ever Fast Show, there was a 'making of' programme in
which they interviewed the real-life guy on whom the character was
based and he was *exactly* like that.

[1] Shame it wasn't Birkett, really.

Not sure I'd agree anout them being the same formula, although it's
true about the catchphrases. But the differece is that FS tended to
actually have (some) genuinely funny sketches written to invlove the
characters, so there was a lot more to them than the catchphrases.
Even Jessy's Diets, where he used the same phrase with one differeent
word in each show, was funny because of that word, as well as the
    timing of the delivery.
