Being young I don't know much about the Harley type bikes. (The ones with
the low seat, beautifully throaty exhausts and high handle bars?)
Is there a decent UK alternative knocking about? I've looked through
biketrader online but I don't know what's British and what isn't...

  3. Short answer: Triumph Rocket III.

Longer answer: All the major Jap manufacturers do a line is various
cruisers of various ilks. The old shape VS (as below) I think is
possibly one of the best looking of the lot. The new ones are gash.

The Japs do have good reliability, older Harleys don't, newer ones are
    better.

And if it's sound you want, get a Valkyrie and stick straigh through
pipes on. A shop I was friendly with had one like that and sold it based
on the noise alone. The guy who bought it heard it asked "what the kin
ell was that?" and bought it. Nascar sounding is about the closest
    resemblance I can conjur.

The Triumph Rocket 3 looks like it could be, if you like that sort of thing.

Cheers. I've seen an online pic of a X-reg Yamaha VMAX 1200cc which is quite
nice. It's near the inlaws-to-be house so I might have to take a trip down
    to say hello...

The only cruiser type bike I've ever come close to liking was Dr Gowers
    Triumph Thunderbird.
Much nicer in the flesh than any pictures I've seen.

  17. Thought you were after a cruiser?
Vmax, especially a full power one is a far cry from a cruiser. [1]

If you're after a muscle bike, also consider a Bandit 1200
