Ok, so the yanks don't do metric so all my tools don't fit my recently
acquired Sportster, but is it AF or some other standard they use before I
splash out on a new socket set and Allen keys etc?

    Ta,

  7. How about Acre-Foot = A water measurement that equals the amount of water
one foot deep covering one flat acre of land. 1 af = 325,851 gallons or
    43,560 cu. ft of water.

What did we do before Google ?

Yes, it is measured across the flats.

Look for fractions and AF and you'll be OK.

Note: not all nuts and bolts on Sportsters are imperial, there's a lot
of metric on there too, especially on the bits they buy in from Japan.

They mix them up? I am gaining more and more (dis)respect for them :)

Spent *another* hour in the Oxford branch after they f*cked up the order my
    SO made for her parents.

I have now sat on all of the models and the only ones that seemed vaguely
interesting were the Buell's.. they're tiny!

However 20 seconds on a 'Fat Blob' (whatever) resulted in a rather severe
    twinge from my back.

They excelled themselves in the second hand shop though - describing a 636
ZX6 as 'miles better' than a K2 GSX-R - "yeah the Kwack was all new for this
year wheras the GSX-R has been the same since 1994"

Right... sad thing was the mug looking was buying it hook line and sinker.

This was also common on Brit bikes in the 1970s, as they were
increasingly sourcing bits from Japan. Although having said that, ISTR
one or two early Jap bikes having the odd imperial nut and bolt,
    too...

For someone so anti Harley you spend an awful lot of time at the
    dealership. Are you a homosexual?
And go brilliantly. Go on. You know you want to.

And, curiously, the brake pistons I made for Lozzo's ZZR11 a couple of
years back were an Imperial dimension 1 3/16", or 30.15mm.

I dunno. I really fucking don't. You don't get the quality of poster
here any more, do you? You try to have a little bit of a wind-up, and
some self-righteous, holier-than-AndrewBleedinR pops his fucking
innocently intelligent heid out from under his rock and pricks yer
bubble withour even so much as a bye-your-fucking-leave.

Threadstopper? I should fucking coco. Humourstopper, this ****.

Yes, you fucking idiot. *I* know that, *you* know that, but Mister
    Fucking CantfindhisarsewithbothhandsandaGPS OH-DP hasn't a fucking
    clue.

You see - there is a standard called American Fine. It may be a
thread, rather than a nut size, but it exists. It also starts with
the vital letters "AF", see. Now, for anybody with one fucking iota
of a sense of fucking humour, here's an opportunity. For you, though
    - what are you, Ronnie Cunting Corhett's straight man - Mister
NoFuckingIdea ... I bet your elbows have fucking atrophied, haven't
they? Feel for your funnybones - not even a fucking lump left, is
    there?

    I fucking despair.

Worse, an SO I'm trying to keep happy. Would you believe I have to go back
*again* this weekend to collect some gloves for her? I'll be on the
Abomination (in tasteful Black) mind you so that's at least better than
    turning up in the car.
    <thinks> Nah.
