    Hello

I have narrowed my purchase next Friday week down to either a FXDX or
FXDL carbed version as people have indicated in this group that carbed
is better than the injected models.
My shopping list is a Black version with carbs and laced wheels and
new straight through pipes with 45% cuts. There are certain features I
    like on both bikes.
On the FXDX I like the double discs on the front wheel and on the FXDL
I like the raking front forks.

The only question I basically have now is what engines are the easiest
to keep clean and pristine as I like a tidy bike. Are the black
engines easier to keep maintained than the silver models ?.

I want to make the purchase next Friday and would like to know what
model would you go for and why ?.

    Cheers Blair

No, depends how long you want to keep it. The wrinkle black finish will
eventually look faded and chipped. That said, I'd still be going for the
FXDX. As far as I know, there's no difference between the two in the forks.

    Buy the FXDX !
I have a '99 FXDX and it handles like no other harley ever has
(sporties included) - with enough power (a good 2 into 1 like a
Supertrapp or similar plus the SE air filter mod is essential) to keep
up (and pass) much more sporting type bikes "up the old road".
I have fitted Brembos and braided lines instead of the woeful '99
model single pot brakes and also a mid glide conversion but that was
simply a matter of taste as I felt the standard front end looked a bit
wimpy. At the back I have a pair of Ikon shocks that have made an
amazing difference to the handling - but a 2000 or later model FXDX
comes standard with adjustable shocks both front and rear and much
    better brakes!
As for the black engine, I have found the finish really durable and
very easy to keep clean. A quick spray of Bike Shine and a wipe over
bringing the finish back to new.
The FXDL is simply too low to the ground to handle well - they wallow
and scrape at even sedate speeds and to me seem more for posing than
    for riding.
The Twin Cam 88 engine is a great improvement over the old Evo - more
power and it can be thrashed without fear - it even loves being
    revved.
    Buy the FXDX !

  6. The Super Glide Sport has better lean angles (rear sits higher and 4
degrees less rake). As far as I can see they both have black motors but
the Super Glide Sport has black covers too. The black engine finishing has
improved on the later models. My '99 shows minimal fading and no chipping
or peeling compared to a mates '94 with two thirds less mileage than mine.
My chrome covers are a breeze to keep clean. Don't know anyone with the
black covers but the clear coated alloy one's used to be a bitch. No idea
if that has improved as the engine coating has.

Out of the two I'd tend towards the Lowrider but I'd be suss of the lean
angles. It all comes down to personal preference.
So what're'ya riding to the pub tonight?

    Hi Pisshead Pete

Still only have my 78 Bonnie at this stage but the weather here is
shit at the moment so taking the car :)

Thanks for the info but I'm definitely leaning towards the FXDX sport
    now.

FXDX is 31.250NZ and the FXDL is 32K. Don't know if I can crimp much
out of them though for cash.

    Hi Tim

I think you have definitely swung me as I like to take the odd corner
at speed and was worried about the height of the FXDL.

Looks like this is my shopping list then.

2004 FXDX with carbs and laced wheels. Also some straight Harris pipes
with the Filter Mod. Will the carbs need to be re jetted ?.

I like the white and pearl colour but you can't get this in the FXDX
so will probably stay with Black but will take the Blue subject to the
Black not being available. BTW I use a product on the tank of my
Bonnie called 3M which seems to maintain the colour beautifully.

Thanks Tim for your input and swinging me to the FXDX as I was worried
about the height and the dual discs on the FXDX I think these day and
times are a must. Off to Wellington next Friday to put in my order.

    Cheers Corky

They weren't too bad after you'd sanded all the clear shit off and
polished 'em up the first time...I wanted the chrome covers but not
enough to get a black engine. Bare alloy with chrome covers, that's what
I'd've done to it if I'd've kept it...
Yeah, the DL looks right. The FXDX looks like it's on tiptoe to
me...Maybe an FXDL with shocks inbetween the DX and DL shock's length.

  12. Yeah, I know what you mean Doug, like the fork boots. It's gunna be
interesting to see how hard all the black shit is to get off the motor
when it finally needs pulling out.

Ditto with the DL. Probably bring it into WG territory. It'll just need a
    proper front end then!

  13. I'll be in trouble if it scrapes!
Any bloke around here with a tyre changing machine will beg to differ!
