This friend of mine does things like 12-hour distance races notching-up
just over 200 miles in that time. I always remember to ask what kind of
club meeting it is before agreeing to go along.

Well, I know that cycling 8km took it out of me when I started going to
a gym after about 15-20 years of no exercise. I know that *I* couldn't
have managed 25km on road at that point. My lack of fitness wasn't (I
    think) that apparent either.

My observations are based on participation in events like these over
the last 15 years and seeing all sorts of people ride them.

I'd still maintain a self-respecting unfit person wouldn't go out on an
event like this as their first step to getting fit.

However it's clear we're not going to agree on this point and I've lost
all will to argue. Age is a terrible thing.

Still not convinced but as said elsewhere, bored now and out of time.

I wouldn't say they'd be doing it to get fit. They'd be doing it for
the sake of doing it, maybe as a challenge, kinda like all those
people who do the London Marathon every year, and yet never go running
    any other time.
Wasn't trying to argue, more to educate.

I have to admit to siding with Burnt on this one.

I cycle on the road very occasionally and last time out before
Christmas I totally knackered myself within 30 minutes.
The first reasonable hill[1] killed me.

[1] I was a hill to me, OK? Ben would call it 'flat'.

Arrrr Jim lad, the wunnerful Mandy had me booked in already.
Right, I have booked up night of 6th to the 11th, so if anyone else is
around or fancies an extended stay, go for it. Failing that, if I'm
*utterly* bored, I'll visit Ginge and you lot on the Manchester side of
    things.

Hopefully Tallbloke will bring the Gazebo this time around

I get back from spain on the 4th so I'll try to make one in. The big tent
will come with me too. Fancy a night out in Leeds on the 6th or 7th Hog?
    Spare bedroom available.

How can rooms get booked before the date is known Lozzo?

It wasn't, I just emailed Mu once the date was known for sure and made a
confirmed reservation. I'm a good customer after all, I stay there at
    other times.
6th to 11th I'm in the BH, just need to be back in Belfast for the 14th.
