Thats what a std 441 mudguard looks like you ignorant
prick...................your dribblings on Jap stuff are bad enough,
but you know even less about Brits it seems!

Looking good.............but I think perhaps the fact your 441 is just
about spot on, will be lost on most here, who are more into XS250's and
    similar shite.

Did I say it was non-standard? Just said I thought it looked hideous.

I'm ignorant of the finer points of BSAs, I freely admit.

ChrisKen, on the other hand, seems ignorant about brake discs,
two-stroke oil, Fantics, Japanese bikes, classic bike magazines, and
indeed just about everything except sexual perversity and impotence, on
which topics he is eminently qualified.....

  7. I guess it does look a bit funny in the pic. It is std, though and the
great expanses of chrome will be broken up by number plate, rear light
fitting and an extra mudguard stay by the time things progress a little
    further

I should also drop in that it's a BSA B44 Victor Special 441cc, just
    for search purposes

  8. Aye, the tissues have been out at regular intervals since getting it
back from Fitforx. They did a good job, tho they had plenty of time
seeing as I sent it to them last July.

I always liked the Special's yellow and alloy tank, too. It was quite a
handsome bike for a lash-up out of tthe BSA parts bin. I just never
liked the back end much, with the seat that looks like it came from a
cafe racer, and that massive rear guard. I always thought it cried out
for a single seat and a litle shortie plastic guard.

This sort of thing is a start:

And I love the red one at the bottom of this page

Am I right in thinking the engine is basically the old B31 lump?

  10. Yeah, that looks nice, tho apart from lopping 3 inches off the rear
mudguard it looks fairly close to stock, but painted non-std colours
not that I know of. The 441 and 500 unit singles were an evolution from
the C15/Tiger Cub engine. While BSA was happy to sell cheaply
engineered C15s to spotty youths the BSA competition shop was not happy
using the standard motor, with its shell bearings and the like, for
long distance trials, scrambles. So, they set about beefing up the
internals with ball and roller bearings, working on the gas flow,
boring it out etc, and those improvements were eventually adopted for
the production models. Starting life as a comp shop special is what
    accounts for the strange displacement.

  11. I had a BSA B31 350 as one of my early bikes but the engine didn't look
like that. I have memories of an external casing to house the push rods
and a high rear mounted "Prince of Darkness" unit, pre unit construction
days etc. Then again I may be wrong.

I think the abbreviated rear end and single seat make it look so much
    better....
Ah. Thanks for that. I had some dim race memory telling me that one of
BSA's revered singles started life as something rather more humble.
DBD34 Gold Star - is that what I'm thinking of?

I dont honestly think you have any idea what you are on about do you?
If so lets see some verifiable details of this 1979 250 Fantic?

    Wotcha.
    Two totally different beasts.

    The B31 & B33 were pre-unit.
The B40, B44 and B50 were unit construction.

Jeff Smiths world championship MX winning B44's were interestingly
enough, either 380cc or 605cc depending on track conditions on the
day.Even today many serious pre-65 MX riders are still using the 380cc
setup, as these will rev very high and are very fast in dry conditions,

  16. Really? Got any links to more on this?

What is it about the 380cc motor that makes it rev high? And why does
    that suit 'dry' conditions?

  17. Think so. Both pre-unit OHV singles of similar vintage.
