Just to warn people halfords spray paint is useless on petrol tanks
I spent weeks rubbing down priming and the putting the final coat on a
cb550 tank only to have it ruined the first time I spilled a drop of
    petrol on it.
    Not happy.

There's a simple solution. Either don't spill petrol on it, or get it
lacquered in 2-pack to seal it.

  5. Wotcha.
I suspect that was what my BSA tank had been done with.
First time I filled up and went for a ride I found two interesting things
    out.
    1. There was no seal on the filler cap.
    2. The paint was not petrol proof.

Ah well - at least it's fixable.

Surely this newsgroup wouldn't really exist if people had an ounce or
    two of sense?

You should have used their petrol-resistant lacquer for final coating.

  9. quite.

and it's not entirely unreasonable to assume that paint sold as suitable for
vehicles might not wash off at the first hint of petrol.

  10. In true numpty fashion I sprayed the Turbo clutch cover in Halfords
gloss black, thinking "I'll never get petrol on that". Of course the
first time I pull the petrol pipe off the pressure from the fuel
injection system sprays petrol everywhere. Arse.

  12. one hopes that the lacquer they supply is petrol-proof, though... Craplan
paint used to have 2 kinds of lacquer, one of which was specifically for use
with 2-part finishes. Guess which one you could never find in the shop?

Not everyone was born a knowitall smartass fucker with the same
forethought of mind that you seem to think you have.

Many thanks to everyone else for the useful advice
I will try again with some better quality clear lacquer.

Most people would have probably looked at the small print on the can
mind you. Come to think of it a lot of people have probably fucked-up
    like that too.
Don't worry, it was an aberration and normal service will be resumed as
    soon as possible.

  16. I think you've hooked another one, ToG.

Mind, from what I gather, the small print on the tin wasn't there
    originally.

Pissed myself laughing at that, (after a while though, as senility sets in
the wheels turn more slowly), but can't you still get cellulose paint?
Isn't that still available until the end of this year? And petrol doesn't
    affect that does it?
