He doesn't want to write my bike off "it's far too nice for that, it
deserves to be rebuilt". However, he doesn't want to spend as much as
Flitwick M/cycles have quoted as that would push costs into write off
territory. He's going to offer me a chance to rebuild it myself with
funds supplied by them, or he'll arrange for it to be moved to a
specialists in Chatteris and they'll rebuild it by repairing/painting
the cracked and scraped fairing panels rather than replacing them.

When he mentioned that I told him straight I'll be going over it with a
fine tooth comb on its return, so it had better be 100% or it'll go
straight back for another try. With that in mind he said he's inclined
to let me do it myself as he can do without the hassle of me toing and
    froing via him with niggles.

He went away saying he'll come back to me in the next couple of days
with a figure to rebuild it myself. I've done my research, got quotes
and prices, and if it's not enough I'll tell him to call his repairers
up and ask them to collect it.

I'd say, you seem to hold all the cards!
And it seems a winning hand ;o)

In some ways, but he may offer me a stupidly low sum to do it myself, in
which case I'll tell him to stick it and arrange a collection. Like I
said, I've priced it up, and I won't accept a figure any less than that.
I don't want some half arsed job doing of the plastic welding and
painting, so I'll weld it myself and give it to Pip's mate to paint - he
did the paint on my ZX-9R after I welded it and you'd never have known
we'd touched it. Mr Assessor assures me the guys who do the repairs at
Chatteris are excellent, so maybe I'll get it back how I want it. If
it's not they'll have it back to redo it, I won't accept a shit job cos
the bike was 100% before the accident and I want it 100% afterwards too.

Exactly. You hold the winning hand.

If the price isn't right for you to take the responsibility of getting it
back to better-than-original, then they may as well have the agro of doing
it. And they'll keep doing it until you're 100% satisfied.

You can't lose either way, other than the time they might take to do it
    properly versus your dedicated time.

    Good luck

Royal and Sun Alliance. The guy sid they are trying to reduce the number
of cosmetic write offs because the situation has got a little out of
hand. Some bikes are written off for the tiniest of easily repairable
    scratches to a painted frame.

I've been insured with them for 3 years now, haven't had to claim yet
though. Sounds like it should be as painless as possible though!
