The sponge never stays white for very long though.

  6. This is where the modern alternative of using breakers has a weak
point. Had a similar shocking experience rewiring my last house, Kate
& the girls were out when I started but came back whilst I was still
working. As she walked in the door Kate saw the breaker down and
thinking it tripped[1] put it back on.

[1] well that's her story, it of course could have been an attempt to
    collect on the insurance.

  7. I had the opposite - I had turned the lighting circuit off while
wiring up the bedroom ceiling fan.. then shouted down to Cheryl to
turn them back on so I could test the fan..

And to my horror I heard the distinctive sound of a roomful
of computers being deprived of power..

She had turned off the main fuse instead.

Oh what fun I had getting the unix and NT boxes back up and fully
working. Given that this was pre-journalling filesystem days..

My Mum id that a few times when my Dad was working on the electrics.
He got into the habit of switching the breakers off and then putting
the cover back on the fuse box and screwing it down.

  9. UPS; YKIMS. You've probably got one or two now, though.

Herself cleaned the hob the other day. Water everywhere. I'm up here
    doing this.

All of a sudden, like, everything goes off.

Wander downstairs, ask what she's done (turned on the back/right hob
ring), so I'm off out to the garage, flick back breaker. (It's
raining, and I'm in me socks)

Walk back indoors, just in time to watch her turn the hob on *again*.

Apparently she thought I'd "fixed" it.

  12. As I heard it a papermill, someone outside restored power whilst
cleaning was in progress. This was mentioned on an electrical safety
course so may have been apocryphal.

  13. In steve auvache triped:
Ain't progress great - in the old days you could fit the fuses in your
pockets but today no bugger makes pockets big enough for ELCB fitted
    consumer units :(

  14. Most new units contain a nice little switchfuse which you can remove and
    keep in your pocket.
An ELCB? RCD's where it's at now, man.

  16. The batteries for those things are a total ripoff - when mine pegs it, I
intend to wire up a lead acid battery instead.
