    Hi.

(Nice timing Antonye but this is about another bike. Maybe you can
    help?)

I may be (if the finance comes through today) buying a black and
silver 2001 Y reg K1 for £3.5k. One owner, 22k miles, usual extras
such as crash bungs, led lights, undertray, hugger, scottoiler, yadda
yadda. The shop will be putting a new chain kit and front tyre on and
'a couple of other bits'. Price seems OK.

So, before I part with my dosh are there any common problems with the
K1? As it's the first model of the gixer thous I assume there were
*some* weaknesses that needed looking at? Or was it just perfect
    first time?

Have googled for forums, recalls, problems etc for the thou. I've
found loadsa reviews that say how great it is, loads bits and bikes
for sale but no posts of the "watch out for...xxx" type.

    Thanks from a regular lurker.

    Mike.

I know nothing about them, just passing on the
For Sale info as for a 52-plated K1 with 6K miles
on the clock it seemed a bargain!

Make your mind up! Is it on a 51- or 52-plate?

I don't fucking know, whatever I pasted in the
first time round. I've gone past caring now.

I'd say it's a smidge high for the mileage. My 10k miles mint example
went for 3600. Although that was partially thanks to the vagaries of
    Ebay.
That was a recall for something to do with the clutch basket. I never
had it done to mine as by the time I got round to it that bike was out
of warranty. Champ had his done and Molly had hers done after it
    broke the engine.

    Shouldn't be a K1 on a 52 plate. My K1 only just squeezed onto a 02
    plate.

However he said it was blue/white/black which were K2 (02 onwards)
colours. K1 was just classic Suzuki blue and white.

    A fine choice, sir.
It was pretty much perfect. As Ben says, there was a fix for the
clutch basket (it wasn't a recall, tho, I don't think). The problem
manifested itself as a judder when pulling away in first. Worth
checking with the dealer to see if it's been done.

The gold anodising comes off the fork legs, but is just a cosmetic
    thing.

Head bearings get knocked out quickly if the bike is wheelied a lot.
And, gixxer thous do get wheelied a lot. ahem.

Otherwise, it's as near the perfect motorcycle you can get. I did 30k
on mine, took it to Italy, Spain, France several times, the Isle of Man
lots of times, did track days on it, went camping etc etc. They're
amazingly fast, handle superbly, and are more comfortable than they
have any right to be. Enjoy.

    Ben says...

My K1 is exactly the same colour scheme as this one. Note the black
    tailpiece:

This is a K2, the colour scheme is slightly different. Tailpiece has a
silver section as well as black:

    My K1 is on a 02 plate, I have seen a couple of K1s on 52 plates.

    The 750 and 600 K1 were classic Suzuki blue/white, but the 1000 K1 and
    K2 had black tailpieces.

Ah fair enough, I mis-remembered, I thought the black tail was on the
    K2.
They must have been sat round a warehouse for a while to be on 52
plates. The K2 came out at the end of 2001 so started being available
on a 51 plate if you were lucky. My K1 was an end-of-line deal
registered on April 14 2002 on an 02.

I'd say it was a lot of money to pay for such a small bike :)

    Shit.

Thanks for the comments folks but they won't give me the finance. I
can actually afford to repay it too, thats whats annoying.
