    Hi

Would anyone here know where you can but a cheap new gs125 from ?
Do you think it would be a good idea to try to do a 130 mile round
trip commute on one of these ? How long do you think it would last for
    ?

I Would like to save my cbr for sunnier days and i think a smaller
bike would pay for itself in fuel savings ?

It will be very painful and boring doing 65 miles each way on a 125.
I've tried 50 miles each way on an MZ ETZ300, which has a considerably
higher speed and twice the bhp, but gave up on the idea after 2 days.
Yes, you'd save a packet in fuel costs, but you'd soon get bored of the
idea and go back to the CBR.

You might get away with doing it on a CB 'Two-Fifty' or similar, but
you'd have to be a more patient man than me to do it for any length of
    time.

Erm. The MZ didn't make the trip any faster than doing it in the car,
which sort of defeated the whole point, really.

Whereas the VFR knocks 15-20 minutes off the trip.

It's not about being a wuss, its about the complete lack of performance
and total boredom of doing 100 miles / day on a bike that takes forever
    to reach 80mph.

Fun once or twice, tedious long-term.

By the time you have shown any savings in terms of fuel, and offset that
against the purchase and maintenance costs, you'd be bored out of your head.

Say it cost you a grand, and you saved 20 quid a month in fuel. 4 years 2
months later and you have a fucked bike with no real saving. By this time,
the CBR will have depreciated heavily too due to age.

You'd be better off getting a middleweight SOB and using that.

    Suggestions include:-

    divvy 600, xj600, gsx600f, gs500, cb500, cb450, gt550, gt750

    That sort of thing.

    My 2p anyways.

My choice would be one of the first 2.

Decent economy, impeccable reliability, reasonable build quality (not
quite Honda standards, but pretty damned close, IMHO).

My Divvy 6 ran to 80-odd thousand miles with no unexpected bills -
tyres, chains and sprockets are unbelievably cheap, too.

Dirt cheap to buy these days, too. IMHO, the earlier rounded-light,
single disc models are better. Don't know why, 'cos the specs are the
same, but my early model was much faster and seemed to handle better
than the later one I had.

No! Definitely not a good idea!
They're ok for slower roads but a liability on fast A roads and motorways.
Plus you'll loose all the feeling in your hands within a week from the
    vibrations.

I'm not saying a thing about my little GS500. The last time I sang
Suzuki's praises about reliability my engine blew.

    thanks for the replies,

I have just worked out the MPG from the cbr 1000f , I got 52mpg over a
136.2 mile period. This is basically going as fast as the traffic on
the motorway allows, maybe it would be even better at a steady 60 mph
    ..

I think I wont bother with the gs125 idea, givens peoples comments
here, the main problem with the big bike though is that I'm tempted to
do such risky speeds and 'stupid' actions.

For example this morning I managed to squeeze in between 2 lorries
that were hogging both lanes of the m3, afterwards I thought, wow that
was stupid.. But it was great fun . Those buggers were racing up the
hill at 55 mph with a q about a half a mile long. I guess I would not
    risk this on a 125...

No, prolly not a good idea. If you're going to do it, get it done
    quickly, loike.

[1] Or used to, when riding on UK motorways. Over here it's just not
    needed.

I have to agree with Lozzo, I did 120 mile each way (Brighton - Westbury)
on an MZ ETZ 250 for a while. If you're saving 20 minutes on a VFR then
you're riding the VFR at warp speed on the motorway or something's wrong
    with the MZ.

It should get to 80 quicker than most cars. When did you last check the
timing? should be 2 - 2.5mm BTDC (3mm is a little too advanced IME). The
red LED shows the firing point.

Piece of piss to set up. Get a dial gauge or one of these.
