It seemed a bit noisy today on the way around, i took my lid off as i
got home & it was making a definite rattle on the left hand cylinder
area. It sounded as rough as a bag of spanners. Any ideas before i take
    it to BMW?

Sounds very much like the engine, noisy as fook. A real 'death rattle'
type noise. Chatting to a bloke today who had the 1150, he has had no
problems in 69k on his. Couple this to the fact he is a Riding
instructor & is out in all weathers. I hope nowts fucked, or it's new
bike time. KTM, here i come.

Try to identify where it's coming from for starters. Maybe that the valve
clearances are out, that can get quite noisy on the boxers. But it
shouldn't be a death rattle, either.
It's under warranty, take it back to the dealer and get it fixed.

And although I may begin to sound like Lozzo, it's not like you haven't been
    warned.

Nige, how many bike purchases and disposals have you made this year?

The 1150 and the 1200 are very, very different bikes.

No, true, it has only got 300 miles on it, surely the valves can't be
    out at that mileage.

I think he's beat me by a comfortable margin and is going after TOG.

    That's a fairly frightening number.

Ages, as in 5 weeks!! Been using the blade too. Yeah, I know it's due
    one soon.

You where right about the throttle etc, it's abitch to keep smooth
progress unless you keep it around 2000 revs & just slip the clutch. I
reckon it's the throttle closed sensor telling the engine to slow right
down, couple it to the fact you get serious backwards compression. It
can lead to real spazzy progress. Drop the throttle too quickly on a 4
cylinder engine you get much less resistance & therefore feel it less.
The rev range doesnt help either. The blade revs to 11k, the BMW revs
to 7k. I have kind of mastered it.

I really do like the bike a lot, It is very quick (for it's type) &
handles well enough. The luggage make it great for work. I took a 25kg
battery charger to work in one of the panniers today, it was a tad
'intersting' at roundabouts, but good fun....

That depends on who did the PDI, for starters. Certain BMW dealers that I
had the pleasure to visit would manage to **** up the simplest job and
weren't too bothered that a certain customer had to call in every time to
    complain about something...

  13. Nige,

I have just had the exact same symptoms, but this happened to me early
Feb, and as it's still under warranty, I took it in to dealership to
get it checked out. They had it for over 4 weeks (waiting for parts
from Germany apparently?)! It needed: a new gearbox, new clutch and
while they were doing the work, found a crack in the bottom of the
rear frame, so they replaced that too (another known problem with
    GS's!).

Then, early this week, the thing cut out on me @ 80 mph and stopped
sparking. Had to be recovered and bike taken straight back in to
dealership again. Got it back this morning. This time, it was the
fuel electronics that had failed due to water getting in (good job I
wasn't crossing a river in the middle of Africa!) So they replaced it
and used a 'modified' seal to prevent it happening again - was
    obviously another crap feature!

I've now lost confidence in my GS and told them so. They weren't
overly receptive, even when I said I would return to Jap bike. To be
fair, they have met their side of the bargain and fixed everything so
far and provided me with alternative wheels for the duration, but good
job it's all under warranty still otherwise I would have had to extend
the mortgage to get that lot fixed.

Will be very interested to hear what your problem is.

Not on me I hope. It was so fucking noisy i thought it was dreaming.
Then, I got aboard the diesel LR & realised I wasnt' suffering tinnitus
    after all.

OK, It's going back I reckon, I do not **** about with expensive metal,
when I have cheap, fast metal that is so much better.

I need a big trailie, help folks.
