My rear guard got ripped off when I hit a pothole, and it sheared off a bolt right next to the brake. I took it in for warranty repair today, but BMW are saying "no can do. Your tires aren't on the recommended list and have a higher profile tread pattern than those on the adventure model, so the knobbies got caught on the guard and ripped it off". I'd love to get tread pattern measurements[1], because I doubt they're any deeper than these ones: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cwx_6tXwMRo/TkFvMjdbSDI/AAAAAAAAB0o/jXqwgqBm6iA/s1600/2012-BMW-R+1200GS-Adventure-3.jpg (third photo down: http://motorboxer.blogspot.com/2011/08/2012-bmw-r-1200-gs-and-1200-gs.html ) I'd say defective design, and that's exactly what statutory warranty was designed to protect against.
