Thank **** for common sense. I managed the 250 miles to work this
morning (left before 5am) with only one or two minor slides when I
decided to boot it just to see what would happen between home and the
    M1.

Mine were, this morning, as usual. The recycling box was untouched when
I left for work but empty when I got home, so unless the local munchkins
go crazy for empty wine bottles I suspect there was no interruption to
    regular service.

When temperatures drop below a certain level, you can throw as much
grit as you like at a road... it has little effect on the ice, not
least when it then has a lot of snow compressed onto the top of it.

Ploughing on the other hand... is great, but no good if the roads are
gridlocked like they were here on Saturday due to so much snow falling
and laying in such a short time.

What do you believe yours gets spent on?

doesn't seem like any road, main, bus route, minor, dual carriage way,
none has been gritted in Bedford.

not that any road is un drivable, been pottering around the town,
occasionally sliding but nothing major. the only real deep breath I
had to take was cos I couldn't see the mini roundabout and someone
    pulled onto it.

the only grit I've seen today is the stuff being thrown at the
pedestrian street in town which melted it nicely.

We have Labour and Plaid councillors, so I assume it gets spunked on
Lesbian theatre groups for Welsh speakers.

I ended up walking home from the shops on Saturday because there
was no northbound traffic (incl. buses) through West Drayton due to an HGV
that got itself stranded trying to get up the incline over the Canal. The
council can't plan for that sort of behaviour. OTOH, there wasn't much sign
of TrafPol going to sort out the mess.

    LOL

    You choose to live there.

(P.S: It's probably spent on things like the vast array of speed
detection equipment at the disposal of Welsh plod)

Well, the lack of treatment 'in Caerphilly' meant there was a traffic
jam stretching around 6 miles+ back from Caerphilly to the M4 (and past
the M4 juntion into Cardiff) - clogging the M4 quite effectively, too,
almost as far back as Cardiff West.

Took me over two hours to do the last third of a mile back to my place
on Saturday because of the gridlock here - the joys of living in a bit
of a valley combined with that kind of weather kicking in on one of
the biggest shopping days of the year.

We needed some shopping so I dumped the car at my place and marched my
tribe down to the local supermarket on foot to help me carry back a
reasonable amount of grub - no panic buying, just happened to be
Saturday is the day of the week we tend to go shopping and needed
    staples like meat / veg.
Well if it was anything like round here, the only way they'd be
getting to anything like that is on foot.

Oh, I'm not surprised. Of course, a bit of gritting on the A505 and A600
might have been handy, but the village road is always going to be last
    on the list.

The A505 has been getting some
    http://www.hertsdirect.org/actweb/saltingdecisions/default.cfm

Walked the dog on Saturday and laughed at those trying to use more revs
to move. Went out in the car on Sat evening and no problems.

I have no fear driving on snow or ice, I fear the others driving on it.

I did have to admit defeat trying to get off Dartmoor after heading up
there to snowboard. Couldn't get up a hill that was icing over with the
dropping temps. Had to turn around and pick another road. The shame.
    Quite.
