I just got my Green Slip (NSW) for $178. (250cc). I must be the wrong age or
in the wrong place because I've heard them going as low $120. I got mine
with QBE, all the others were charging $250-odd. I heard Aon were cheap, but
have stopped doing Green Slips because they got swamped with business.
    What's everyone else paying?

In Tassie, it appears that the "greenslips" here are $421 whether you like
it or not. All car/bike greenslips are done through MAIB - kinda like NSW
with GIO pre-greenslip. I am just getting back into bikes again and am yet
to register one here so I may be wrong but I looked this up the other day
    here:
    http://www.transport.tas.gov.au/fees/calc4.html#How to Calculate Fees Payable

Another rider from Tassie may like to confirm or deny my fears here.

When riding my shit hot 1973 CB250 in highschool (god it was bad - but it
beat the bus) when they had just
introduced greenslips in NSW, the grand total for the same thing was $61.

    Cheers,
    Brad

What suburb? I'm in Syd Nthn Beaches and I'm 32. $178 was as cheap as it got
    for the GPX. (also QBE).

I just (now) did an MAA thing (http://www.maa.nsw.gov.au) for
a theoretical AnyMake/AnyModel 250cc bike living in postcode
2000 (sydney) with a 37yo owner/rider, no more than two
    speeding tickets, etc.

Got prices ranging from $171inc to $254inc (and guess what,
AAMI was the highest!). Meguesses you didn't get ripped
    that badly.

Having said that, when I did green slips for both my car
and my yzf1000rj (ie: thunderarse, not R1) a couple of weeks
ago (January is a bad month!), I got snail-mailed offers for
renewals from the companies that currently had the business
(different co for the car and the bike as it happens) and both
of them were *substantially* cheaper (in the order of $80-$100)
than the prices I got from the maa.nsw.gov.au web site.

Could be that the $120 you heard of was a renewal offer?

MB lives waaaay up bush where they don't have suburbs.
Where he lives isn't the end of the earth, but you can
    see it from there.

the main town, 35k's of farm land...
