    Yeah, what a coincidence! But there are alternatives to paying the
    tax; various deductions have kept me under the threshold for 2 years
    now. Join a political party: (up to) $100 deduction; join a union:
    $440 deduction (for me); donate to Amnesty, the Brain Injury
    Foundation, CARE Australia, the OBL retirement fund, whatever.

    I suppose this only works if you earn somewhere near the threshold;
    not much future in donating $20 or $30 thou every year. Fortunately,
    there doesn't seem to be much prospect of me keeping a PHIC in the
    luxury to which its directors and shareholders are accustomed.

    When I had my CB200, the combination of greenslip and insurance was
    actually CHEAPER for full comprehensive (with 60% no claim bonus & so
    on) than 3rd Party property. Mind you, the market value was probably
    only about $500, which didn't give you much change out of the
    excess...
