Some were contradictory, although, charitably, I assumed that this was
    deliberate.

I think it's a bit more complex than that.

Relatively solvent, knows which end of a museum to hold and and not as
scummy as Champ. I can live with that.

Perception's an odd thing though, as if I'd been asked to guess before
doing the test I'd probably have stored myself 40/20/40. Christ, it must
be shit for lots of folk out there

I thought it was medical practitioner, which I would have thought would
have covered both medical doctors and my pet clinical physiologist

So did I, but I still managed to score 80/100 on the cultural scale.

Which frankly astonishes me. Although I'm less surorised that they
think I'm an overpaid antisocial git. full results:

You scored 97/100 for economic capital.
You scored 30/100 for social capital.
You scored 80/100 for cultural capital.

Several things 'wrong' with their assertions.

    A) it doesn't actually claim that the derivation is false.
    B) it seems to fixate on the idea of luggage labels, which is a rather
    absurd notion.
    C) it completely ignores the fact that there was no air-conditioning
back then, so the whole subtanning issue would pale (sorry) into
insignificance compared to how hot the cabin would be.
    D) I'm pretty sure the acronymic origin is correct.

The large word "FALSE", next to a big red icon, under the derivation
claim at the top of the page is a bit too subtle a clue, it appears.

Nom that's mereky saying that the claim, _as stated_ is false. Which
is all about luggage labels and shit. Not at all addressing the
question of whether the word came from the acronym or not.

Whatever. In any case, if you booked a cabin, you booked a specifici
cabin. With a number. No need for a ticket with a "POSH" stamp on it.
    Err, yes, of course.
The "earlier" usage was first noted from 1890, according to the
article. So about the time that loads of people were travelling to and
    from the Orient, then.
In what what is the earlier usage inconsistent with the acronym
    derivation?

Don't be too ready to accept that 'recorded usage' is the same as
    'meaning'
"Backronyms" are very common, and I think that the assosiation with
"Port Out Starboard Home" could very easily have lead to the change
in, and more common usage of, the current accepted meaning of the
    word.
