GPZ Turbo

Discussion in 'Classic Motorbikes' started by mike. buckley, Dec 18, 2005.

  1. Well, I finally went to see the GPZ I've been told about.

It's definitely in need of some TLC, it's not been on the road since
1998 but looks to have been stored somewhere decent in that time.

    Faults:
Battery warning - seller says this is because the wrong battery has been
fitted and the low electrolyte sensor is missing, and this is an easy
    fix.
Battery being over charged, seller says this is because battery is too
small (only 9A). He's going to check the charge with a proper sized
    battery.
Small pits on one of the fork stanchion - seller including good spare
    leg with the deal.
Cack chrome turbo pipes - seller fitting pukka black ones

The only thing I spotted (and is really why I'm posting now), is that
there was a very small bit of smoke on start up from cold. The seller is
claiming that if you fill the oil to the top mark then they can smoke,
and in fact this is what the previous owner had done. Is this right, or
is this a sign of expense to come? The smoke went in 3-4 seconds after
starting and considering the bikes not been ridden more than 100 yards
up the road in the last few years the engine sounded really sweet. Idle
was slightly rough but he'd only just sorted the TPS switch (special
Kwak tool needed apparently?) and had yet to balance the injectors, it
    still sounded ok to me.

Apart from that there's all the usual with a bike needing TLC, new C+S,
tyres a bit ropey, etc etc.

He also has a v nice standard exhaust system which is tempting me.

I haven't put any money down yet, he's going to sort a few things out
and get it MOTd, potentially pick it up towards the end of Jan. Price is
    just sub 1k.

I still got a good vibe from the seller, he had lots of spares and was
making a cracking job of a Turbo special, he's also owned no other bikes
(apart from a ZRX750 which he hated) since the GPZ Turbos came out new,
so he's a bit of a turbo nut.

  2. Yes. Except that the sensor is plumbed into the loom and just needs to
be stuck into any battery cell. It doubles as a refill plug.

I'd check the charge with a multimeter, myself.
    Good

    <snip the rest>

    Sounds OK to me....

Did you leave it to warm up at all? Does it smoke when it's hot, after
you rev the engine? That'd likely to be the turbo seals...

  5. Nope, no smoke when hot. Seller blasted it 100 yards up the road and
    back and it was fine.

The sensor is attached to the loom by a bullet connector. Replacement
sensors are readily available and as you say double as a filler plug - I
paid £2 for a replacement for the missing one on the Kwak turbo I've got.

....and then found the missing one under the battery case. You can have
that one if I can find it again.

Or plumb in a 12v feed to bullet the sensor attaches to which will switch
    the warning off.

Sounds like a complete piece of crap to me.

Give me the seller's details and I'll tell him you're not interested.

    Save you the bother, like.

  10. Heh, he also has an absolutely mint project bike[1] (is a runner but
needs finishing) that he won't part with, but he also has a longer term
project (ie probably never), that looks like a Harris frame with an
alloy cafe racer tank - that looks very interesting, he's trying to get
a cafe style rear end made up so he can bung all the electrics under the
    seat hump.

[1] Std frame but ZZR running gear, straight bars and very very black.

  11. A bit of reading on 750turbo.com seems to suggest that they can smoke
when cold with no ill effects, seems common when they are on the
    sidestand.

I need one too. If you get this to replace your non standard one: how
    much for yours?

  13. Heh cool
Hands off! He actually tried to ebay it, but I guess the reserve was
too high. I'll probably take it off his hands :)

  15. Will do. I think you saw the pics[1] and it's a bit ropey, but if I get
the standard one fitted you can have it if you collect. Actually, swap
you for a battery sensor. :)

    [1] If not http://www.toastyhamster.plus.com/turbo1.bmp - bit leaky
where the end can joins but nothing a bit of exhaust paste wouldn't
    cure.

    Done! Collect from where?

I needed to get the manky one off and resorted to an air chisel to do the
job so anything's going to be an improvement until I get a bespoke system
    sorted.

It also weighs a fucking ton as well as being evil on the eye:

  17. Solihull, although I don't get the bike til mid-end of Jan.
Yeah that's pretty grot. Handy pics for me though, now I know which
parts to remove the chrome from and add oil!

  18. Boxers do that too :)

mind, slight-moderate smoke when cold but not continuously is probably not
too bad. Big clouds of smoke or continuous smoke are likely to be bad
    signs.

  19. on my Boxer, the previous owner (mate of mine) moulded a fibreglass rear
hump on the back of the dual seat, then cut the seat down to single size.
    Doesn't look too bad.

    <Aha! moment>

Noticed mine doing it. That must be why the RHS heads fail more
    frequently...
