GPZ 500z?

  1. Hi,

Just got hold of a brace of slightly sad Kawasaki GPZ 500z's. While I'm
waiting for the ordered Haynes manual to be delivered, a little help
with a few questions please, on the first example...

It boiled up and blew the coolant out, while ticking over in the
garage. I later found out that it had an electric cooling fan which was
seized up. I managed to free it off without removing it, but it boiled
up again on tickover in the garage (fine on the road). I managed to
find and check the fuse, which was OK, so it is either the motor, the
thermal switch, or the wiring. Where is the switch supposed to be, in
amongst all of the greasy murk?

I couldn't find a dipstick, but did spy a little glass window very low
down on the engine. My guess would be that the level needs to be
halfway up the window, but it seems to be far to low. Could someone
confirm this and is this level set with it on the ground, centre stand
or what? What oil should I top it up with?

Someone has added an illuminated switch on the fairing next to the
speedo, it is wired up to (something???). It doesn't seem to make any
difference that I can tell. I thought it might be to enable the parking
lights to be left on and turn the panel off, but it didn't. What might
    this switch be for?

The lower front panel has a not very obvious horizontal split all the
way down one side. What is the best way to repair it? I was thinking of
bridging the split with some material to reinforce the back of the
join. What works best for an adhesive on these panels?

Thermostat? Maybe the radiator's caked in crud as well, quite likely if
it's been ridden through the winter.
The level should be between two marks on the window but make sure the
bike is upright when you take the measurement ot else it will look like
the level is too low and you could run the risk of over filling.
An extra set of lights? The fan?
Personally, I'd use gaffer tape but saw this url posted here a couple of
    days ago:

You might see a me in here for a while, until I get these two sorted
    :)
According to the gauge, on the road it runs too cool, which suggests
the 'stat might be stuck open. Rad is perfectly clean outside.

Thanks for the other ideas and the URL...

    Already on route ;-)
I hadn't spotted the lines, I'll look again in daylight. 10/40 gallons
    of it here, thanks :)
Thanks anyway, I just thought it might be be part of some well known
    modification for this machine.
