Doing some checks on Speedometers and Odometers between mine and mates bikes
and he was wondering if .... "when the GPS loses contact with the
satellites, (e.g extended periods in wooded deep valleys) does the odometer
bit of it stop recording distance ? If not, I assume it must assume a
straight line for the part of the trip between losing coverage and regaining
    it ?

    Thanks,

    Nick

Depends on the model, the 6210 stops recording all data such as average
speed, distance etc. However I have a feeling the 6220 that can be
connected to an electronic speedo can maintain data and even detect
direction changes. The only downside is the 6220 has a disk drive that
    does not like bumps.

    Err...

The Garmin 2610 (compact flash) and 2620 (hard drive) do not,
the 2650 (compact flash) and 2660 (hard drive) connect to your speedo
    cable and hence do

The new C series do look rather like the TomTom...

Ah, I knew it was one of them, note that I still refer to them as Nokias
and not as Garmins. The sales chappie did explain the differences between
the Garmin range but as I am a bit of a technophobe I tend to lack
interest or understanding of such things(1)

    (1) The 2610 took me via the twisties from North Beds to Reading on
Thursday with precision accuracy, it was a shame that I actually wanted to
go to Theale(2) but it was an enjoyable journey anyway.

    (2) I blame it on a combination of age, um age, and well age.
