    I've spotted these units:

    http://tinyurl.com/84pmq

    http://tinyurl.com/9hdzx

    Both at Morgan.

Any opinions as to usability? Will they re route on the fly?

Is the unit usable as a PDA, as well?

Go to your local PC world or whatever that stocks them, and ask for a
demonstration, then make nice apologies and leave if it suits you, or
just tell them it isn't what you are looking for.

Do they also provide reviews from users?

Second one is the one to go for as it's also a standard WinMobile PDA.

I'd junk the supplied software and get hold of a *cough*copy*cough* of
    TomTom5, though.

Hmm...would that *cough* fit onto a TomTom 300?

No. The 'Go' units use different maps and software to the PDA version of
TomTom. ISTR the 'Go' range is equivalent to TomTom5, though.

Ah, I thought you were just abbreviating the 500 version of TomTom Go.
Which costs a lot more than the 300, obviously, because it has it's own
hard drive and everything else that the salesman tried to tell us we
    needed.

Well I've just been given an ipaq rx3715 from work.
What GPS can I fit to it?

I have the bottom one although branded as a Mio 168. As a PDA alone
it's very good so I'd say get one. However it is ex display so not
sure how much of a beating it'll have taken. You can buy a brand new
Mio on the net for £205 albeit without the crap SatNav software.

GPS receiver lacks Sirf III so isn't too accurate but TBH unless you
used a Sirf III receiver you probably wouldn't notice too much.

What expansion slots does it have? If it's got bluetooth look at a
bluetooth unit (e.g. tomtom navigator 5). Somewhere like
totalgps.co.uk should point you in the right directions, but I'd shop
    around on price.

Was in Halfords today and asked for a demo of the navman pda vs the
tomtom 300. Chap said he couldn't as the batteries weren't charged,
but did say to avoid navman (even though it was more expensive). He
reckoned they'd had a few back with complaints of them not working,
locking up mid-journey and the PDA one was a bit slow, doing neither
navigation or PDA-stuff that well. I don't know if he was just trying
to push the Tomtoms instead though.

That said, one bloke was in returning his navman PDA when we entered
the shop, so that seems to indicate he's not being entirely dishonest.

Oddly enough, the chap in PC World steered us away from the Navman and
advised us to use the TomTom Go 300 (well, he really wanted to flog us
the 500, but the 300 was lots cheaper, and I don't have a bluetooth
    phone..).

Perhaps both salesman were being honest? Unfortunately, the Tom Tom
Rider has a price of £599, plus it also uses bluetooth, which I don't
    have.

I might get one of the budget ones next year (Aldi or Lidl were
recently selling one that can be used on a bike for about £160) and
compare that with the Tom Tom.

Do they use solid-state memory rather than a micro-drive? Can they
swim? How well do they bounce?

All important questions if you plan using it on the bike.

I bought the i510 for Jude ealier this year and am very pleased with
it. Yes, it recalculates routes on the fly, and quite quickly too.
No, the i510 isn't. Or at least, it could be, I suppose, if you wanted
to load stuff up yourself, as it does run Windows CE, but it's set to
atart straight into the Nav application with no possibility to run
anything else. So maybe, if you really know what you're doing.

The PIN looks like it might be, though. The giveaway is the text: "PiN
Pocket PC - full featured colour PDA and Sat Nav system".
