Assuming these are only really as good as the database that backs them up
    ....

    a. Which is considered the best, in terms of data accuracy?
    b. Is there a combined satnav/camera locator that's worth bothering with?

I was hoping there was going to be an explanation of how a GPS unit
    "detects" cameras...

    Just

    (1)Drive everywhere flat out.

    (2)Wait for tickets to arrive.

(3)Ask for photographic evidence in each case.

(4)Use photograph to determine location of camera.

(5)Use photgraphs to construct scale map (1:1 is best) of country showing
    camera locations.

Tom Tom works well and the POI database of Speed cameras is free from
    www.pocketgpsworld.com
but the maps from Tom Tom can be anything up to 18 months out of date.

  7. In uk.rec.motorcycles, simonk amazed us all with this pearl of wisdom:
Very accurate. I've got a 1st gen one that's very good. You get a
finder's fee of 20 quid if you find one and you report it before anyone
else but the downside is that cameras are moved/removed and this can
    trigger a false alarm
I wouldn't know about that. I've got a Humble Geodesy.

I use TomTom on PDA and I have downloaded the camera overlay from
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/ ( as previously mentioned) and it seems to be
very accurate, also you can add new Camera or Revenue Van locations via the
    favourites menu.

The Tom Tom routes are a bit bizzare sometimes though!!

The pocketgpsworld site keep databases which are updated monthly IIRC
You can install seperate files and icons for different types of cameras,
or use the all in one file for simplicity.
There are various satnav packages for pocket pc and palm pilot platforms
as well as off the shelf units such as Garmin which you can download the
camera data to. TomTom is reckoned the best, I use Kirrio on a palm based
unit, with the seperate camera databases for each type of camera, 'cos
    it's both geeky and pikey.
