I don't think anyone's ever won the premier-class championship without
winning a GP that year (though it's certainly happened in the lower-
classes; Emilio Alzamora's 250 championship of about 10 years ago
springs to mind). Nicky Hayden won in 2006 with only 2 GP wins and
Eddie Lawson won in 1989 with only 3.
On the other side of the table no-one's ever lost with 7 wins but 3
    times someone's lost with 6.
The closest was in 1983 when Fast Freddie and King Kenny split the 12
wins down the middle and Kenny lost the championship by 2 points.
The hardest done-by was Revvin Kevin in 1989 when he won 6 GPs only to
finish 4th behind Lawson (3), Rainey (4) and Christian Sarron (0).

Other GP winners in 1989 were Magee (1 win, 5th), Chili (1 sort-of
    win, 6th) and Gardner (2 wins 10th).

Well, there WAS Laguna Seca (oh, hang on, that wasn't a 1am thing our time,
    was it?)

I think it's gonna' be WORSE with homogenous tyres because it'll remove
another variable which may favour a different bike/rider occasionally.
Sure this was a year where the Michelins didn't get much of a go (I think
there were a couple of wet races at track that would've favoured Michelin in
the dry, and maybe they already had wind of the rats about to desert them so
they didn't try too hard either) but half the fun used to be the fortunate
against-the-odds performances like Nakano on the Kwakka, Guintoli on the Yam
or Elias on the Honda (or going back a decade or two Lawson on the Cagiva),
or against the odds losses like when tyres suddenly flew to pieces whan the
    favourite had the race shot-to-bits.

Of course the other reason the races are boring is that the bikes don't
break down, run out of petrol or overheat to add some unexpectedness to
    results too.
Oh well... I may as well suspend my Foxtel now....

    A "bi" inaccurate too!
In 1989 Steady Eddie won 3-and-a-half (half points for a short race), Rainey
won 3, Magee 0 (his win was in 1988) and Gardner 1 (he won 2 in 1990).

GAH! MotoGP races have gotten boring to watch - 47 seconds separating
Its been the same for 10+ years... 125's ahve always been the fairing
bashing close racing I'd like the big class to be.

hey Sete is returning on a hunk of shit, still to fail...

  6. Hmm similar to the "hunk of shit" that won the last race?
or the "hunk of shit" that won 6 races this season?
or the "hunk of shit" that won the championship last year?
Ducati did build the occasional lemon in the 70s' and 80s' but by the 90s'
they had developed their marketing to such a fine art that all such bikes
    were
directed to purchases who were "Wankers" so as to remove them permanently
    from the
refined and astute group of motorcycle enthusiasts proud to be Ducatisti.

Bad comparison for one reason. Stoner beat Rossi to a World
Championship. Biaggi and Gibbers never did.

OCCASIONAL???? WTF rock do you live under?

proud that I dont even have photos of that mistake anymore.

Not just worse for the racing. If there's no competitor for the tyre
manufacturer to beat, what incentive is there for them to keep investing
money into tyre development? Now that most of the premier bike/car
racing competition have control tyres, it will have a flow on effect
back down to the consumer market.

Well.. yeah .. I sincerely, fervently hope that it'll be resurrected soon
(after the "No bikes being dismantled until AFTER gNatailie's 21st!") edict
lapses but in the MEAN TIME it's dead and very, very lamented!

Which might just mean that, if you find a tyre that works well for your
particular bike and riding, you can go to the shop and ask for another
one of them, and not be told:"No, that model has been superseded."
