Sure Roberts was world champ. But it was a long time ago now. Criville
was also a world champ but got fired. Jacques was a world champ too and
is no longer with us. You can't live on the past for ever. I get the
impression that Roberts hasn't been trying very hard for way too long
now. Gibernau was at least as fast and now Hopkins is pretty
    consistently faster.

It'll be interesting to see what changes Paul Denning makes when he
    takes over the team.

  2. Get a grip Mark. Despite your conviction that there is a Eurocentric
movement in Europe it doesn't make it true. Despite your paranoia, that most
Americans seem to have these days, that doesn't make the rest of the world
anti-American. It's not true even if most of us find your current government
    incredibly stupid in foreign affairs.

Strange. I have this distinct memory that he left Honda and started a
season on a Yamaha. Which then meant that Honda got all upset and
refused to let him ride a Honda in Spain for a lap of honour when he
    finally retired.
While Doohan was dominating and while Alex picked up some of the most
horrific injuries. I also remember him taking a while but eventually
pushing Doohan harder than anyone else including the infamous crowd
invasion when he was leading on the 2nd to last lap. Doohan was a race
apart from anyone and he destroyed each challenger. Alex was the only
one to push him and get close for a whole season and over more than one
    year.
Indeed. My impression. Not helped by him pulling in during a race and
parking it, or not even bothering to start.

Yeah. Doohan wasn't that good. He was just lucky to be on the best bike
all those years, right, Mark? I mean he really wasn't as good as those
Americans before him, right? So the fact that Alex Criville never quite
managed to beat him means that Alex must have been hopeless and only got
a ride because he was Spanish.
Yeah. That's it. The odds were stacked against him because he was
American. And didn't bring sponsorship money with him. And couldn't
leverage a championship into a race winning ride. So stuck with an
under-performing factory for too long. So stopped looking for that last
1% of time on the track. And very publicly accused his team of not
trying any more. So other factories and teams begin to wonder if he's
still got what it takes. And why they should employ somebody who isn't
trying and moans a lot. Which stacks the odds further against him.

Gotta go. PI final qualifying is on the TV.
