I rode my bike to work today for the first time and it was awesome. I reckon
i could have rode up the arse of a truck and still not wiped that idiotic
    smile off my face. :-D

Sure its been great riding around the farm and in the bush, but there is
noting like taking to the open road. And riding around town was a ball.

First time I ever got a wave was after I rode my high-powered Honda CB 175
to Adelaide; all these other rider-people kept waving at me! I thought; "My
bike's on fire or what?" Riders back in Melbourne were nowhere near as
    demonstrative.

On the highway back home,, I got into this waving business, and learnt rule
    #2:
If one is a Harley-riding wanker, one does not wave, one ignores waves.

My opinion of Harley riders got off to a bad start. After 28 years, there
hasn't been much improvement to speak of.

There's two kinds of harley wankers. The ones who are too
good to wave, and the ones who don't need to.

Who cares, cruisers aren't proper bikes anyway.

I grew up in Adelaide, and really did notice the difference when I moved
to Melb. Adelaide riders will quite often give a little 'wave' with
their left hand, rather than the 'very cool' nod you get over here.
(well, less a 'wave' and more a 'lifting fingers off the bar', but you
    get the idea.)

I'm starting to give a little wave again, and sure enough, people will
give it back if they have time. I'm getting overly animated on the
postie though - I get strange looks from the sports bikes - a grinning
idiot on a postie waving to them is not something people see every day!

kepp that feeling going Steve. Nods are good. Waves are better. Get into the
wave. I refuse to "nod" back, always wave. .Waving has been a tradition
since I started rinding ('75). The only way to go.

On the interstate highway or out in the sticks I'll generally wave but
around town I'm generally too busy to even nod much.

I know how you feel. I think it will be a while before i start waving to
everyone heh. It might have been a lot of fun riding around town, but it was
also a little scary, and im only in a relatively quite country town compared
    to say Sydney.

You certainly feel very small when a truck pulls up beside you at the
traffic lights and i see now why motorcyclists like to take off before
everyone else, its not because they are showing off (ok maybe a little), its
because they want to get the hell away from everyone else.

I like to whack the cruise control on and give the hell's accountants a big
wave with the right hand, then watch while they pretend not to look at me.

Nods is easier when you're more busierer.

  13. I wave in the country, but around town, no time to take either hand off the
bars. A nod is definately better than nothing.

    Disagree here.
I got 2 nods from coppers, one on a marked bike and one an unmarked bike
    this evening.
then a sweet young thing driving a mazda something gave me a smile and a
    wave.
    this was in melbourne.
I waved back but didn't want to frighten her by removing my helmet:)

Bingo, at least that's the excuse i use (the occasional hooning aside).
have you tried the infamous lanesplit? if you have thoughts about it
be very bloody careful, not like this squid i saw on a trumpy triple this
arvo. lugnut coming back along king georges ave lanesplitting 40km/h
traffic, that's akin to slight suicidal tendancies in my book.

There wasa guy i was happy to not try and play "catchup" with.
