Goodwood Festival of Speed

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Peter Boulton, Jun 17, 2005.

  1. Thought I'd give Goodwood Festival of Speed a try next Friday. Anyone
have any experience of parking there? The website says:

" there is an area of hard standing at Goodwood Motor Circuit for
motorcycles to park, with a helmet storage facility at the same
location, where riders can leave their helmets for a small fee (usually
donated to charity). There is also limited hard standing in each public
car park. It’s best to always bring a motorcycle stand for use on grass."

Will it be a bun-fight for hard standing? Only I don't have a grassy
stand and am not keen on returning to find my bike lying down in a field!

    Thanks!

    Pete

You can buy side stand pucks or take an off-cut of wood (4"x4"); at a
pinch crush a can top to bottom and use that.

Buy a puck, ffs - or flatten a can and stick it in your pocket or
within reach so you can stick it under the stand before you put the
weight of the bike on it. It isn't rocket science.

it depends how soft the ground is. Your best bet - though not terribly
convenient - would be to use a metal beer tray.

Dry, dusty and a filthy TVR that left its roof down 2 years ago LOL
I parked the bike near the entrance, on hard core. otherwise, it looked like
    everyone was on the fields.

I recently used a tesco clubcard on the IOM. It's knackered the card
but the bike stayed upright. The ground wasn't especially soft though,
so two or three value-less/replaceable cards might be an idea on very
soft ground if you get caught shirt.

  7. What I used until it got left somewhere was an old metal ashtray, the
type pubs used to use on their outside tables before the glass ones
became common. This is ideal, right size to fit unnder the seat.

Folklore says they'll only do that if it's about to rain, but anyone from
the country will tell you that they also lay down when it's hot, and have
been seen to stay up when it rains.

Find or buy a coke can, make sure it's empty, stamp on it, use it as a
    puck.

Park up, open pannier, open crate of beer, open can, drink contents,
flatten can, place under sidestand, drink remainder of crate.

Worked for me this time last year, and that was a swamp.

Yep, beer, that'll work too. Althought fizzy pop is the way to go if you
    want to ride after.

Well YMMV but I'm quite happy to ride after a couple of beers.

    Bloody alcohol nazis.

Ok, I'm not used to drinking, and a couple of beers make me pissed.

Yes, I saw that when Pip posted it in the post I was replying to with
an alternative to the can method, but thanks anyway.

Good idea. Muck and I will be there too. Anyone else?
WRVS (or suchlike) portacabin. A quid for your helmet... oh and
a quid for your back protector... oh and another quid for your
    jacket.

    Still, it's all for Charidee.
You can park easily enough on the grass... but there's no leave-
your-helmet places in the car parks, only at the bike park at
    the circuit.
There's loads of hard standing space. The circuit is about half
a mile from the FoS site, and there's a minibus service if you
    can't walk that far.

    Ah, err. hmm.

Luckily some german neighbours took pity on my stricken horizontal bike
and righted it before I had chance to see it resting itself on the
    grass.

I was told not to use the c/stand by those more seasoned than myself in
grassy field parking, but you don't learn until you do.

    Cheers

    Paul.
