Because she thought she would win, and everyone would love her. When she realised she wasn't going to win, she thought "**** this for a game of soldiers" and dropped out. Perhaps the Olympic organisers should have taped half a million dollars to the finishing line, then she might have done better. -- | ___ Salad Dodger |/ \ _/_____\_ GL1500SEV/CBR1100XXX/KH500A8/TS250C |_\_____/_| ..73063../..16589.../..3180./.19406 (>|_|_|<) TPPFATUICG#7 DIAABTCOD#9 YTC#4 PM#5 |__|_|__| BOTAFOT #70 BOTAFOF #09 two#11 WG* \ |^| / IbW#0 & KotIbW# BotTOS#6 GP#4 \|^|/ ANORAK#17 IbB#4 '^'
That was my view too. I'm absolutely certain she could have continued to the finish, but obviously an also-ran finish didn't appeal, so she jacked it in. Ob: running - I've somehow persuaded myself to run a 20km race in Brussels in May next year - some friends are doing it and I'd been talking about the last time I did it, nearly twenty years ago, and somehow talked myself into doing it again. It'd be nice to think I could beat my 1h49m time from then, but I may be just dreaming...
She didn't say at the time, but she had injury and other problems. To continue to run, knowing the problems could have made it worse. Obviously, she knew what the cynics would say if she mentioned these problems and decided to not make any excuses. Should be easy to beat, 1h49m isn't fast.
Well that rather depends on how much training one does, I'd say. For many 40+ people, that would be quite fast, in fact. I'm not going to set it as a target or anything though, as I don't intend to do a lot of specific training; I'm relying on it being the end of the ski season for my general fitness (50-odd days on the slopes tends to make for a very fit Ace) with just a few sessions in the month or so beforehand, starting at perhaps 10km.
8< Now, a cynic might say you're already making excuses... Hmm, Brussels is only 130km down the road. Haven't done any running since having meniscus ops on both knees. However, I'm now under 2 hours for a 40 mile cycle ride. I'm also the wrong side of 40.
Not at all - my objective will be to get round it in a 'reasonable' time, which, given that I'm not, and never have been, a competitive runner, would probably be anything under two hours. Beating my previous time would be a bonus. Likewise, actually, but I reckon if they can stand up to the beating they take over 50-odd days skiing they can survive a 20km run. Nice. I've been very lax on the cycling front since we moved over here, which is ironic since we're in a great position for both off- and on-road work, but I'd got up to a best of ~55 mins for the 20-mile commute I used to do. Last time I cycled to work here (~25miles, some of it off-road, but downhill on the way in) I took a leisurely hour and a half. On the way back, however, I boinked out at ~28miles and had to get off and walk up a hill :-{ You're still younger than that, then?
