Takes the NY marathon and with a real fighting finish too, that should see
of anyone who thought she was a quitter.

She can do it when she's being paid, then?

Funny I didn't know the Olympics had become an amateurs only show again
and let's face it the pay would be better with an Olympic gold.

  4. That finish was indeed impressive. Go Paula.

I'm with SD on this one. It's easy when there's a bag of cash at the end
    of it.

Dunno. Used to do a bit of cross-country at school / college, probably
4-5 miles or so. Ran 400 hurdles at county level, too.

I'm not saying it's easy, but it seems the money provided a bit extra
    motivation.

Possibly added motivation, but cash doesn't make it 'easy'.
I could be guaranteed a million and still not be able to run a
    marathon.

It's her job, so I don't feel quite as sorry for her as I would have
if she was an amateur. She failed at her job in Athens.
However, she's still a very talented runner who works hard for her
success. I'm pleased she won in New York.

She wasn't being paid in Athens.

If money was the only incentive, she wouldn't have been there at all.

She was running in Athens because it was for an Olympic gold medal.
Probably would have put up her 'price' if she could have been Olympic
    and World champion.
It's certainly doing no harm to Kelly Holmes' 'price'.

I understand your argument, but don't agree with it.

Quitting is not finishing the race when you're only a few miles from the
end. The girny coo could have walked the last few miles and crossed the
line just like everyone else does ... even the folk in the costumes.

Why do you think she went to Athens?

She did well in the NY marathon, but obviously anything she does won't be
able to satisfy the ignorant Sun-reader, armchair-cynic mentality.

in Scotland[1] and N.I., "gurning" refers (usually to a child) crying
noisily so hard it's face is all screwed up. I think the more
mainstream definition you've referred to is a mutation of the original
    colloquialism.

[1] I'm presuming from the spelling of "cow" as "coo", that is
    a porridge-wog.

FWIW my take on her failing in Athens all other things being equal,
Marathon runners need to dissipate a lot of heat which is why you see the
top runners soaking themselves with water on the way round. The heat
dissipation issue favours small people and Paula isn't so small as Marathon
runners go, she does best on the colder races and - I believe - Athens was
too hot she ran into physical problems because of it. Anyone who thinks you
train all those months just to give up halfway round because the purse isn't
    big enough is dreaming.
