As a result of the impending election, the ID cards legislation is shelved. Hurrah! Temporarily. -- John SV650 Black it is and naked
Yes, I'm sure, but we can enjoy it whilst it lasts. forget the generals, they ought ot ask the rest of us rank and file. -- John SV650 Black it is and naked
and have they asked the same general public if they still want the same id cards if it costs them £120 plus for the privilege, hmmmm I think not. The Liberal Democrats have the right idea - they think they are too expensive, also too expensive to implement, unlikely to tackle the problems claimed and an infringement of civil liberties. One bloody good reason for not voting this shower back in again. Except that Speccy Dalek, sorry, Michael Howard, seems in favour of them too.
I'd say it is popular. If your sample is made up entirely of Cross of St. George wearing WVM, Daily Mail readers and it came under the heading 'immigration controls' you'd get a 100% yes vote.
One of the problems with his lot [1] is that any of the major decisions made by the Labour cabinet would've been also made by the Tories. And then some. The Tories history and past actions have been about centralisation of power; any deregulation has always been industrial or financial, never political. Any talk about 'empowerment' or 'choice' has been a cover for money making. Before voting out this shower be very certain what you're voting in. I suspect you'd find their reactionary and smug, self serving, satisfaction *even* more unbearable. [1] Aside my personal politics.
I'm leaning strongly towards the libdems this time round. Labour are no longer the socialist vote, the tories are a joke, and nobody but the yellows offers any kind of viable alternative. I'm also kind of disgusted at the negative campaigning that's already going on between the two main parties. The yellows seem to be keeping it clean, at least for the time being. Fortunately, this seat's been creeping close to marginal for years (and Labour don't stand a chance) so I might be pleasantly surprised. Unlike Theresa May...

Good. Let's hope that whatever lying, scheming, useless bunch of tossers gets elected this time, this particular and spectacularly crap idea is binned.
I agree. My core politics have always been somewhere between Labour and Liberal, but I've supported labour as the only viable alternative. Fortunately for me, I don't have to make a real choice - there's not much point voting for Labour in Cheltenham, so I can vote LibDem with a clear conscience.
Me too, I've always voted for them locally, and living in a libdem ward am pretty happy with the job they do at that level. It would be interesting to see them get enough of a vote to make a viable opposition, even if they don't win. I'm not even against the local income tax instead of council tax proposals, despite it probably leaving me slightly worse off.
Because very, very few issues are amenable to a simple yes/no answer. For instance, with ID cards, there's all sorts of ways they could be implemented, voluntary/mandatory, what data is on them, etc etc. The job of parliament is to debate these details. You're electing someone to do the work on your behalf.
What was that film with Pete and Dud where the government got in on a 'referenda for all' ticket and managed to make the electorate do all of its work?
ogden wrote: I'm with you there, all the way. So far, but will it last? Already, the local libdem newsletter has an article undermining the Conservative candidate who 'claims' to live in the town, but who for other reasons has just proudly announced he lives in London. (no chance of my vote falling that way, in any case.) Ours is creeping libDem from Labour... -- John SV650 Black it is and naked
And, IMO that's the sort of thinking we need to accept. It's no use wanting better public services, students not in debt etc, on the one hand, whilst moaning about being taxed on the other. -- John SV650 Black it is and naked
sweller wrote I am not so sure. I have been conducting my own little opinion poll on the matter and in general it looks like those who seem to be for it because the Gummint says it will be a Good Idea are not those likely to be doing any of the actual voting. Voters seem to be for it or agin it in fairly even numbers and for very fixed ideological grounds. Mine is made up of the people I meet and discuss the matter with.
