But if people didn't ride or drive uninsured, the levy wouldn't be
necessary and so wouldn't be factored into policy costs.

Is it? Seems perfectly reasonable to me. If you've not been in the
position where this is the only way to get your biking kicks, you
won't be in a position to understand why anyone would do so.
Yes, but just _riding_ without insurance doesn't have that effect.
It's only in the event of an accident that this effect will kick in.

There's getting your kicks, and there's being plain irresponsible.
Riding for "biking kicks", as you put it, is hardly one of life's
    necessities.

I paid for my biking kicks with two part-time jobs. I have no empathy
with anyone who decides to shirk their basic responsibility by having no
licence, no tax and no insurance.
A rather Orwellian mindset you have there. If people didn't ride without
insurance, nobody would have an accident while uninsured. Or are you
trying to argue that there's no connection between the two?

See, I _knew_ you wouldn't understand. Were you never a teenager,
then? No, you probably shifted straight from childhood into your
    early-middle-aged mentality, at a guess.
Well bully for you, Mr. Angry of Tonbridge Wells. But really, you only
succeed in proving my point - you have no empathy with these kids, by
    your own admission.

Coming from a right-wing reactionary such as yourself, that's quite
    rich.

Why should I have, or want to have, empathy with them?

And it's either Tunbridge Wells or Tonbridge, FWIW, depending which town
    you're referring to.

Is that what you think of me? That's perhaps the funniest thing you've
    ever posted.

  11. Where's the hypocrisy? I've committed no crimes.

And you claim I never had a childhood because I didn't ride untaxed
    and uninsured as a nipper?

I was priveliged in as much as my parents never split up, and raised
me to know right from wrong. I haven't had an especially lavish
unbringing, what with my parents being a teacher and a paramedic.

Furthermore, I've worked since I was 16, right through 6th form,
college and university. So I've earned my motorcycles, house, and my
    generously paid engineering job.

    So **** off you ****.
Not reasonable or responsible human beings though, are they.

I feel saddened by deaths when I stop and think about them.

If anyone thinks that makes me some kind of freak, thats their
    perogative.

I was going to write "I don't understand people who don't do the same",
but we're well into the realm of feelings and emotions where logic
doesn't apply at all, so there is no right or wrong, just how you're
bought up and how strong the values that were instilled in you are
    IYSWIM.

Out of interest did you have a religious upbringing? I'm certain my
concern for others is one of the left overs from mine.

    Some thoughts.

    Read carefully what Champ wrote:

"I've certainly been a fucking idiot on many occasion, but not one who
attempts to emote over people he has no knowledge of."

I'm not sure if by that means that he has not even a grain of compassion
for people he has knowledge of but does not 'know' (not in the biblical
    sense) IYSWIM.

    That pesky 'know' word again.

He could not fail to have had knowledge of what was happening to
'people' in Bosnia via the media, though probably no familial
relationship, friendship or first hand experience of any individual from
    the region.

Is it possible to empathise with people you don't even know exist?

As Simian, I think, was alluding to, empathy does not always result in
    compassion anyway.

So in a world without compassion would IFOR have happened? Yes I know it
    wasn't as simple as that.

Without compassion for others we don't 'know' would we have a National
Health System, Social Services, Income Tax even?

Can there be compassion without empathy?

I think for me this is one of those not for UKRM discussions.

Fair enough. I should have directed my question directly at Champ.

I didn't have a religious upbringing but I really felt sorry for all
the people caught up in last weeks killings in Mumbai. This could be
down to having been in places where this sort of crap can (and has)
happened so I tend to have a bit of a feeling of "it could have been
me" so I don't think it's really the same thing iyswim.

I can't ignore animals that torture kids as in the case in the papers
at the moment and I'd honestly top the fuckers and feel no regrets
about doing it but that's another thing altogether.

We've been having 'discussions' at work about the Haringey council
employees and my view is that I'd sack the fucking lot of them with no
chance of a penny pay off but I wouldn't touch their pensions. Others
would cut them off and take their pensions away but that's something
they've paid for out of their own pocket and they're still entitled to
no matter how much they've fucked up.

(didn't get this post from you)

Not really. My mum dragged me to church where I went to sunday school
    and was bored silly.

As soon as I was old enough I only went back at Christmas for a few
years more to see a few people I'd made friends with and to see if I
could beat my own record for how many mince pies I could eat in one
    evening.

Then what happens to all the other kids they're supporting? What
happens to the cases on their way to court atm?

Bring in other people that can support the kids.

There cannot be any excuse for failing kids in the way that certain
employees of that council have been proved to have done. If you want
to argue against that then fine, **** off and find someone who'll
listen to you but it won't be me.
