Good lad

    Read it again:

"Used to happen a lot when I worked for Ericsson. Some lad on a
crosser would go flying about up and down the road, over the banks in
the car park.. until one day he didn't come around any more"

I'm struggling to see how you can come to the conclusion he was doing
it on a nicked bike unless he was nicking them on a regular basis and
just used that road and the car park banks as his escape route.
I still wouldn't be happy if he died.

    Odd response?

The usual group response to "Biker Down" posts from nearly everyone in
the group is "We don't give a **** unless its someone we know/knew"?

It's worth pointing out that this isn't a biker down thread and Muck
mentioned a lad killing himself on a crosser, not quite the same thing
IMO. It's ok though because I understand that I'm wrong to think
    Sean's a wanker.

I suppose my distorted view of this is because I rode a bike when I
was young and actually do give a **** when someone dies on a bike.
Quite a few of my friends died crashing bikes before they were 21
years old and I'd hate to think another bike owner would have said
shit like that about them when they heard what had happened.

Yep, you should have thought he's a right wing, Daily Mail reading,
"think of the kids" tosser instead :)
I've never been one of the "I don't give a shit" crowd, having nearly
been a "biker down for good" myself.

The day we don't care that another human being has died is the day part
    of our humanity dies.

So just out of interest, what other crimes (part from bike theft) do
you think should carry the death penalty?

I think John Donne put it better. "Any man's death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for
whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee".

For me I think the trick is not to *think* about others dying. If I
think about them then the pain they've gone though, the grief their
family is going through, all that kind of stuff, those thoughts just
trundle through my mind on their own.

I'd just like to point out that both the kid on the crosser[1], and the
one I met[2] when I was in hospital both had something in common. They
both tried to turn corners on tarmac at speed while on off road knobbly
    tyres.

The kid who died used to ride his crosser a lot, all over the place..
the other kid with the broken legs was test riding an off road bike on
the road. In the end he got in trouble with the law, and had to pay to
fix a wall and buy the wreaked bike too.

[1] The kid smacked into a tree right by a turning, I'm presuming that
it was because he lost it going round the corner there.
[2] Survived, but broke both legs on a small wall.

Is there not a difference between not caring and taking pleasure in
    hearing that someone has died?

Don't be daft. As Simian says, it's a couple a second. How you gonna
care about all of them? If you're alive, one day you're going to be
dead, as obviously as night follows day. Why 'care' about such a
    natural, and inevitable, process?

I wouldn't go as far as to hang the thieving bastards - but should Karma
decree that they get killed whilst riding a stolen bike, then I'll be
    satisfied.
I've done silly things on bikes in the past, but they've always been my
    bikes I've done 'em on.

I'm not stating that it was a nicked bike - I was trying to make the point
that IF it were a stolen bike, etc. etc.
My bikes mean a lot to me - I value 'em more than the life of the kind of
    person who would steal 'em.
Would I kill to prevent one getting stolen ? No, I don't think I would,
but if the thief died whilst riding it, then I would feel some kind of
    "justice" had been done.

Ah, but did they die whilst riding bikes they had just stolen ?
I dare say we all know folks who died riding, and died far too soon.

I said "should he get killed on it" - not "he should be killed for stealing
    it"

It ain't so much the demise of the thief, it's more the way the thief met
    his end.

I suppose some crimes could carry the death penalty, but that's a slippery
slope. Just where do you draw the line. Murder ? Rape ? Armed robbery ?
Speeding ? Not carrying an ID card ?

But we must value life and hold it precious.

A famous philosopher (Hillel ?) taught that if one saves the life of one
man it is equivalent to saving the world because the lives of his
decendants for all future time have also been saved.

Our days may be numbered at around three score years and ten, but every
premature death diminishes the core of our humanity.
