Anyone know how to fix a rattling brake caliper on an 1984
Aspencade, with 84K miles. Runs like a champ, but the
caliper housing rattles. The dealer said it would just have
to be replaced. Not willing to spend $250.

I suppose.. if the dealer says it should be replaced, you will have only two
options.. Either spend the $250.00 to replace it, or listen to the
    rattle..LOL..

Something must be worn so badly that it can no longer be tightened enough ..
That would make it unsafe.. If you like the bike, spend the damn money and
call it a day.. Ride safe...

I'd have to see the caliper. There is a "plate" that goes on the
caliper and is usually held in by a couple of pins. The plate is to
help prevent brake dust from covering you and the bike.

If that plate gets loose it can rattle a bit. It doesn't affect the
performance of the calliper, but it might be annoying. It's easy to
see if that is what is what it is. Just using your finger you can tap
on it and if it rattles around that is what is causing your problem.

If that is what it is, just remove the pins and plate as if you were
doing a brake job and either replace the plate or bend the tabs enough
    to make it tight again.

Spend $30 on a shop manual at Helms (http://www.helminc.com) and do the
    job yourself.
